Child abuse cases rise in the city, with Yuen Long the worst district
The number of reported cases of child abuse rose 2.1 per cent last year to hit 874 – an average of 2.4 cases per day – according to figures from the Social Welfare Department. In more than 60 per cent of the cases, which mostly involved physical abuse or sexual assault, parents were the abusers. Figures showed Yuen Long was the district with the largest number of cases. A social worker said the situation could get worse amid a bleak economic outlook.

Trampolining needs to be regulated, says lawmaker
More people are being injured while trampolining as the activity gains popularity in the city. Reporters recently visiting a venue at Kowloonbay International Trade and Exhibition Centre saw a young girl being taken to hospital after suffering injuries to her face after colliding with another person on a trampoline. All those trampolining at the centre were children, with the youngest only three years old, and there was only one member of staff for every 10 trampoliners. There was no coach present to guide participants either. Lawmaker Wong Kwok-hing said trampolining was a danger-fraught activity and the government should legislate to regulate the sport.
