Hundreds of thousands gathered on both sides of Victoria Harbour to watch the Chinese New Year fireworks, setting aside the tensions raised by Monday night’s riot in Mong Kok.

Chief Executive Leung Chun-ying warned last night’s protesters who escaped arrest to avoid going to the fireworks and causing further trouble.

The Lunar New Year pyrotechnics display was one of the most anticipated events during the holiday, featuring monkey faces lighting up the night sky.

Among the flood of pictures being posted on social media, stunning images were taken from across the city, including Central, Wan Chai, and Tsim Sha Tsui. Photos captured the show from unexpected locations, too.
