New | Pan-democrat Charles Mok open to political reform talks but says no to ‘compromise’
No olive branch as legislator says he still rejects Beijing’s framework
A moderate pan-democrat legislator, Charles Mok, said today he was open to meeting central government officials to discuss Hong Kong's political reform but dismissed speculation he was about to offer an olive branch.
After he gave a media interview last week, it had been suggested that Mok was prepared to accept a compromise on Beijing’s proposals on how to select the Chief Executive for 2017.
But in an interview with RTHK this morning, he sought to disabuse this view, saying that he still rejected the central government’s framework.
On what he intended to share with them, he said: “I will concretely tell them the reason why so many Hongkongers do not accept the August 31 decision, and what effect we think it will have if we accept the framework.”
"I think we have the responsibility to tell them this.”
Mok explained his offer to attend a meeting thus: “If we have a chance to meet with central government officials who can influence their decisions, I am willing to attend.”
"This will be not confined to any form, even if closed door meetings, because sometimes it has to be, I will have no problems," he said.
