Twenty-one people were injured, one critically, after a fire sparked by a gas explosion tore through a crowded restaurant at lunch hour yesterday. More than 200 others were evacuated.

The blast shattered at least 10 big windows and blew off window grilles from the Ying Choi Seafood Restaurant at Chevalier Garden estate in Ma On Shan.

The explosion sent glass shards and debris flying into the two-lane carriageway below.

Chum Tai-kong, the Ma On Shan fire station commander, said a technician had been carrying out work in the restaurant's air conditioning machine room at the time of the blast.

"We are investigating what kind of work he was doing and what equipment he used," Chum said.
