Taiwan and eastern mainland provinces are bracing for the arrival of Super Typhoon Nepartak as the worst floods since 1998 inundate central and eastern parts of the country.

A host of cancellations of flights between Hong Kong and Taiwan took effect on Thursday evening as the typhoon neared.

Hong Kong-based carriers Cathay Pacific and Dragonair cancelled two dozen flights to Taipei, Taichung, Kaohsiung and axed stopover flights from the Taiwanese capital to Japan.

Hong Kong Airlines also cancelled several flights.

Nepartak was due to slam into Taiwan late Thursday or early Friday, the island’s Central Weather Bureau said.
