Taiwan and eastern mainland provinces are bracing for the arrival of Super Typhoon Nepartak as the worst floods since 1998 inundate central and eastern parts of the country.
A host of cancellations of flights between Hong Kong and Taiwan took effect on Thursday evening as the typhoon neared.
Hong Kong-based carriers ­Cathay Pacific and Dragonair cancelled two dozen flights to Taipei, Taichung, Kaohsiung and axed stopover flights from the Taiwanese capital to Japan.
Hong Kong Airlines also cancelled several flights.
Nepartak was due to slam into Taiwan late Thursday or early Friday, the island’s Central Weather Bureau said.

It would bring winds of up to 200km/h near its centre, driving rain and huge seas when it made landfall, it said.
More than 35,000 troops were on standby to help with evacuations and disaster relief, and
90 shelters had been opened.
Most domestic flights were grounded while 59 international flights would be affected, Taipei’s two main airports said.
On the mainland, weather warnings and alerts were raised for the eastern coastal provinces.
Heavy rain and sea warnings were raised in Fujian, where the storm was most likely to make landfall. Parts of Zhejiang province, just to the north, would experience heavy rain, China
National Radio reported.

Zhejiang was “extremely likely” to see floods and landslides after suffering heavy rain since the start of the flood season, it said.
The water level of Tai Lake, west of Shanghai, had long surpassed the warning level, and nearby mountainsides were saturated, it said.
The storm was expected to affect Anhui, Jiangsu and Jiangxi provinces, where many lakes and rivers are full to overflowing amid the worst floods since 1998.
Many flights from mainland cities to Taiwan had also been cancelled due to the typhoon.
Cross-strait shipping ferries and even some train services in Zhejiang were suspended due to flooding.
