Singaporean 3D printing pioneer Chua Chee Kai has joined Wuhan University of Science and Technology (WUST) as a full-time distinguished professor, receiving his appointment in a ceremony on October 10, according to the university’s website.
For decades, Chua led major 3D printing research initiatives in Singapore, helping to turn the country into a global hub for additive manufacturing technologies used in aerospace, biomedical and electronic applications.
In his remarks at the ceremony, Chua said WUST was a university with strong academic traditions and a deep sense of social responsibility. He added that he was honoured to join the institution and looked forward to the road ahead.
Chua said he hoped to dedicate himself fully to the university’s development and to share his knowledge, experience and international connections to support its growth and global reputation.

From the start of his career at Nanyang Technological University through to the Singapore University of Technology and Design, Chua has helped to shape the global development of additive manufacturing – also known as 3D printing – by pioneering new processes and applications from industrial design to tissue engineering.
ScholarGPS, which identifies the top 0.05 per cent of researchers worldwide for their career-long impact, included Chua among its highly ranked scholars for lifetime contributions in 2024. He ranked first globally in rapid prototyping and fourth in 3D printing.
His academic contributions have earned worldwide recognition, including the International Freeform and Additive Manufacturing Excellence Award in 2018, one of the field’s highest honours that recognises sustained innovation and leadership in 3D printing research.
In 2014, Chua received Singapore’s Public Administration Silver Medal for his leadership as chair of Nanyang Technological University’s School of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, and for establishing what later became the Singapore Centre for 3D Printing.
Chua maintained close ties with China’s academic community, giving lectures at numerous institutions including Peking University School and Hospital of Stomatology, the Shanghai University of Engineering Science and Shenzhen University, among others.
WUST, a provincial key university in central China’s Hubei province, is known for its strengths in materials science, metallurgy and mechanical engineering. In recent years, it has expanded its recruitment of overseas experts and strengthened research in advanced manufacturing and biomedical engineering.
Also joining the university on October 10 was Qing-Guo Wang, a control and automation expert who spent more than two decades at the National University of Singapore and several years at the University of Johannesburg in South Africa before returning to China in 2020.
He was a chair professor at BNU-HKBU United International College in Zhuhai before moving to Wuhan.
Wang is ranked among the top 0.05 per cent of scientists worldwide by ScholarGPS for his lifetime contributions in control theory and PID controller design – a key method used to keep automated systems stable and precise – placing sixth globally in the latter field.
Chua is a fellow of the Academy of Engineering, Singapore, and Wang is a member of the Academy of Science of South Africa.
