At least one person was killed and 11 are missing after they were buried by a landslide in central China as the region continued to battle severe flooding caused by Typhoon Saudel.
The landslide hit Gaoping, a town in a mountainous area of Jiangxi province, at around 4am on Saturday, according to state broadcaster CCTV.
It said rescue teams were rushing to the disaster site.
The accident followed days of torrential rain brought by the outer bands of Typhoon Saudel and a cold front.
Floodwaters have inundated Suichuan county, where the landslide struck, trapping residents, triggering road collapses and severely disrupting essential public services.
The local water supplier issued an emergency notice warning that raw water quality had reached unsafe levels as a result of the floods and advised residents to let their tap water settle in containers before use.
Local fire and rescue departments have been working around the clock to evacuate stranded residents.
On Friday, firefighters using rubber dinghies navigated severely flooded and impassable roads in Shuangqiao township to rescue a pregnant woman.
She arrived safely at a local maternity hospital and successfully delivered a baby girl shortly after noon, according to the local authorities.
In Yaqian town, responders also had to evacuate an elderly resident whose house had been cut off by the floods after they suffered a heart attack.
Meanwhile, workers battled heavy rain to repair optical cable connections for more than 300 households who had been cut off from the telecoms network.

The local traffic management bureau set up temporary traffic controls on key roads in Jinshi town following a series of road collapses.
The typhoon caused severe disruption to air services along the country’s east coast after it first made landfall further north in Zhejiang province last week.
Flights from major hubs, including Ningbo, Wenzhou, Taizhou and Zhoushan, were all affected – along with routes to and from Hong Kong, Taiwan and Okinawa – but services have now returned to normal.
China’s Ministry of Natural Resources has upgraded its geological disaster defence response for Jiangxi from Level IV to Level III, citing the suspected mudslide.
It added that a working group had been sent to the site to oversee and guide the rescue operations.
The ministry also ordered an advance team of provincial natural resources experts to provide immediate technical support for the search and rescue efforts.
Local authorities were urged to step up patrols, monitoring, and early warning systems to prevent similar secondary disasters.
The China Geological Survey and the ministry’s technical guidance centre have also been told to provide additional analysis.
Neighbouring Fujian province was also severely battered by Typhoon Saudel, prompting China’s National Development and Reform Commission to allocate an additional 100 million yuan (US$15 million) to support recovery efforts on Friday.
Several parts of the province saw record daily levels of rainfall on Thursday and Friday, including Putian city where 416.5mm (16.4 inches) – a local record for September – fell in the space of 24 hours.

Some surrounding villages recorded more than 500mm over the same period.
The deluge caused extensive flooding and several people are missing.
Floodwaters in Huating town in the city’s Chengxiang district rose to heights of up to 3 metres (10 feet), submerging homes.
The 1,000-year-old Taiping bridge in Fengting town was swept away by raging floodwaters on Thursday, though no casualties were reported.
Meanwhile, near the scenic Fujian Tulou heritage complex in Nanjing county, floodwaters of up to 5 metres uprooted a 600-year-old banyan tree that was a well-known local landmark.
Fujian’s tea production sector also suffered a staggering blow, particularly in Fuding city – one of the country’s primary tea producers.
In some areas, tea shops and storage facilities were submerged under up to 2 metres of water. Tonnes of high-value tea inventories have been ruined and local officials said the direct economic losses caused could reach 330 million yuan.
The Jiangxi landslide was the latest deadly accident caused by extreme weather in recent months, and once again highlights the vulnerability of China’s mountainous regions to environmental change.
The nation is still reeling from a catastrophic debris flow on its border with Nepal, triggered by a glacier collapse on August 26.


The resulting flash floods and landslides devastated border infrastructure, wiped out entire settlements and killed hundreds of people.
According to the latest figures, 31 people have been confirmed dead while 531 are missing in Tibet’s Gyirong county, where search and rescue operations are continuing around the clock.
Across the border in Nepal, the death toll has reached 1,342 while another 4,898 people are missing.
Earlier this summer, southwestern China was also hit by fatal landslides, including a massive slope failure in Chongqing’s Pengshui county on July 17 that claimed 42 lives and buried residential buildings along the Wu River.
