Parts of eastern and southern China are bracing for heavy to torrential rain over the next three days, with authorities warning of floods, landslides and mudslides, as Typhoon Saudel re-forms over the South China Sea.
Several airports could be affected, including Guangzhou Baiyun, Shenzhen Baoan, Zhuhai Jinwan, Xiamen Gaoqi, Fuzhou Changle, Wenzhou Longwan, Ningbo Lishe and Hong Kong International Airport, according to aviation data platform VariFlight.
So far, no large-scale flight cancellations have been announced. Some travellers took to social media to express concern and confusion over whether their flight plans would be affected by the storm’s revival.


The unusual development took place early on Tuesday, when a tropical depression formed from the remnants of Saudel strengthened again into a typhoon over the northwestern South China Sea.
The storm had previously made landfall in Zhejiang on Friday – marking the third typhoon to strike the eastern province this year – before weakening and being declassified by China’s National Meteorological Centre (NMC) on Sunday.
The centre said it would continue to use the storm’s original name, Saudel, and number 2618.
As of 1pm on Tuesday, Saudel was about 345km (214 miles) south of the coastal city of Shanwei in southeastern Guangdong province.




The storm’s revival followed a rare trajectory, although there were precedents, analysts said.
NMC chief forecaster Xu Yinglong told state news agency Xinhua that the change in underlying surface conditions was key to its revival.
Moving from land to warm waters reduced friction while providing the system with a fresh source of energy, allowing it to strengthen again, he said.
Xin Xin, a weather analyst with China Weather TV, said other examples of revived typhoons were Hagibis in 2014 and Co-May last year.
“But Saudel’s path from making landfall in eastern China to re-entering the South China Sea from the south and reviving is unprecedented,” Xin said in a social media post.
It came as heavy rain was forecast across parts of eastern and southern China through to Thursday, with some areas expected to see heavy to torrential rain.
On Tuesday, heavy rain or torrential downpours were forecast for southeastern Zhejiang, central and eastern Fujian, eastern Guangdong, southern Jiangxi, southern Taiwan, as well as parts of eastern Heilongjiang and northeastern Jilin.

Northeastern Fujian could see particularly heavy rainfall.
The NMC extended its yellow rainstorm warning on Tuesday, the second-lowest level in China’s four-tier warning system.
The centre urged people in affected regions to guard against flash floods, mudslides and landslides.
People in mountainous areas and river valleys were advised to stay away from potentially dangerous locations and heed local weather forecasts and warnings.
Strong winds were also forecast across much of the South China Sea and nearby waters from Tuesday morning to Wednesday morning.


Coastal areas of Hainan, southern Zhejiang and northern Fujian were expected to experience strong winds.
Saudel was forecast to move into the northeastern South China Sea later on Tuesday. From Thursday, it was expected to turn around over the northeastern South China Sea and gradually weaken.
The Hong Kong Observatory issued a typhoon signal No 1 on Monday as the remnants of Saudel intensified.
The No 1 signal is Hong Kong’s lowest tier for a typhoon, meaning that a tropical cyclone is centred within about 800km of the territory and may affect it. The signal will stay in force at least until Wednesday morning.
