Parts of eastern and southern China are bracing for heavy to torrential rain over the next three days, with authorities warning of floods, landslides and mudslides, as Typhoon Saudel re-forms over the South China Sea.
Several airports could be affected, including Guangzhou Baiyun, Shenzhen Baoan, Zhuhai Jinwan, Xiamen Gaoqi, Fuzhou Changle, Wenzhou Longwan, Ningbo Lishe and Hong Kong International Airport, according to aviation data platform VariFlight.
So far, no large-scale flight cancellations have been announced. Some travellers took to social media to express concern and confusion over whether their flight plans would be affected by the storm’s revival.
The unusual development took place early on Tuesday, when a tropical depression formed from the remnants of Saudel strengthened again into a typhoon over the northwestern South China Sea.
The storm had previously made landfall in Zhejiang on Friday – marking the third typhoon to strike the eastern province this year – before weakening and being declassified by China’s National Meteorological Centre (NMC) on Sunday.
