Quote: It is "extremely regrettable" that Chinese President Xi Jinping's speech on the sidelines of a military parade in Beijing the same day failed to refer to reconciliation with Japan.
"We had requested that this event include elements of reconciliation between Japan and China, not a so-called anti-Japan feature."
Suga was citing a history of friendship between the two countries since normalisation of diplomatic ties in 1972 and two rounds of talks between Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and Xi in November last year and April this year.
"But President Xi Jinping made no reference to such elements. I think it was extremely regrettable," the top government spokesman said.

Putin stressed the importance of "the way we look at historical issues," noting that the two countries "should not forget the cruelty of the occupiers on the occupied territories" and the conflict's "innumerable victims."
On the economic front, Putin called for deeper Sino-Russian ties, saying that the two countries are ready to face the "turbulence that is happening in the world, in our economies".
