The expulsion of two former leaders from the Chinese armed forces and Communist Party “eliminated a major hidden political danger”, China’s military mouthpiece said on Wednesday.
The party expelled Zhang Youxia, former vice-chairman of the Central Military Commission (CMC), and fellow former CMC member Liu Zhenli for factionalism and disloyalty, state media reported on Monday.
The CMC is the country’s top military authority and is chaired by President Xi Jinping.
“The serious investigation and punishment of the two eliminated a major hidden political danger for the party and the military and constitutes a major victory in the military’s tough, protracted and overall battle against corruption,” the PLA Daily said in a front-page editorial, referring to Zhang and Liu.
Their removal would promote the “purity and honour” of the military and allow it to accomplish its missions and tasks, the editorial said.
The piece went on to praise the anti-corruption achievements in the military since Xi came to power in 2012.


The People’s Liberation Army has “thoroughly uncovered the lingering poisonous influences and accumulated ills, undergone tempering and forging from the inside out”, which has “continuously improved the morale and spirit of the troops”, the article said.
It said the “international situation, national conditions and party and military conditions are all undergoing complex and profound changes”, therefore “we must unify our thinking and actions with the decisions and arrangements of the party Central Committee and the CMC”.
It called for the military to “integrate political rectification into everyday work and make it a regular practice” to “ensure that the gun is always under the party’s command” and to “eradicate evil completely and leave corruptive elements with no place to hide”.




It also called on the military to strengthen its training and preparations for war and closely follow changes in technology, warfare and adversaries.
“We need to genuinely think about matters of fighting wars, genuinely plan for the problems of fighting wars, genuinely grasp preparations for fighting wars, vigorously carry out realistic combat-oriented military training, accelerate the development of advanced combat effectiveness, and advance the development and application of combat forces in new domains and of new qualities,” the editorial said.
A stern statement on Monday said the two generals, who were put under investigation on January 24, were accused of severe violations of party discipline and suspected of serious crimes.


Their offences included “taking advantage of their positions to seek promotions for others in exchange for huge amounts of money”, “accepting gifts and money in violation of regulations” and “failing to properly educate and restrain their relatives and close staff”, according to the statement.
In recent years, the Chinese government’s massive anti-corruption campaign has brought down dozens of the military’s top brass.
Before Zhang and Liu’s expulsion, CMC members He Weidong, Li Shangfu and Miao Hua were also removed in disgrace. This has left just two members, Xi and vice-chairman Zhang Shengmin, on the seven-seat commission.
