Last month, the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) released footage showing its H-6N bomber flying with a nuclear-capable Jing Lei-1 (JL-1) air-launched ballistic missile (ALBM), offering a rare look at China’s airborne nuclear strike capability.
The H-6N is one of the latest modernised variants of the H-6, the country’s only strategic bomber. Its flight carrying the ALBM during a joint anti-ship exercise was featured in a documentary by state broadcaster CCTV for the PLA’s 99th anniversary.
The unveiling comes as China expands the scope of its H-6 bombers’ activities beyond its nearby airspace.
In July 2024, two H-6s were spotted conducting joint patrol near Alaska for the first time with their Russian counterpart, the Tu-95, prompting the US-Canadian North American Aerospace Defence Command to scramble their fighter jets.
For the past six decades, the H-6 has served as Beijing’s primary strategic strike aircraft. With the JL-1 ALBM able to be mounted on the H-6N bomber, China is now considered to have completed its nuclear triad, boosting its nuclear deterrence and second-strike capability.




History and development
Manufactured by the Xian Aircraft Industrial Corporation, the H-6’s design is based on the Soviet-made Tu-16 strategic heavy bomber, one of the earliest Soviet jet bombers, developed in 1952.
Beijing began licensing production of the Soviet-made warplane after it signed an agreement with Moscow in 1957 to acquire components and manufacturing data to make the Tu-16, later designated as H-6, in China.
In 1959, the first Chinese-assembled Soviet Tu-16 bomber conducted its maiden flight and was transferred to the PLA.
However, following the Sino-Soviet split in the 1960s, Beijing had to independently build the H-6 without the Soviet Union’s help.
After encountering significant delays in the first years of the Cultural Revolution, China’s first fully domestically produced H-6 bomber made its maiden flight in December 1968.
Since the aircraft’s inception, China has produced more than 230 H-6 bombers, with modernised variants remaining in production. It also exported the bomber to Egypt and Iraq. Iraq deployed its fleet during the first Iran-Iraq war.
During the 1991 Gulf war, Iraq’s entire H-6 fleet was destroyed on the ground by US-led coalition forces. Egypt retired its H-6 fleet in 2000.
China’s variants of the H-6 have served in various roles. Among those currently in service in the PLA with recent upgrades are the H-6K and H-6N with the air force and the H-6J with the navy.
The H-6K, known as the “god of war”, and the naval variant H-6J are conventional bombers, responsible for launching precision-guided land-attack cruise missiles and striking maritime targets using anti-ship missiles, respectively.
In contrast, the H-6N, nicknamed the “god of thunder”, is designed to carry large, nuclear-capable ALBMs.
By introducing this capability, China restored the airborne leg of its nuclear triad, supplementing its intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBM) and submarine-launched ballistic missiles (SLBM).
H-6N variant specifications and armaments
Reportedly entering service in 2018 and making its first public appearance at China’s 2019 military parade, the H-6N variant is a redesigned, modernised strategic bomber capable of carrying the nuclear-capable JL-1 ALBM.




According to an estimate by the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute, a Swedish think tank, as of 2026, there are about 20 H-6Ns in service, with up to 20 nuclear warheads assigned to them.
The H-6N bears a modified fuselage, replacing the traditional internal bomb bay used in other H-6 variants with a recessed underbelly designed to carry oversized external payloads such as an ALBM.
It is also notable for its nose-mounted aerial-refuelling probe, allowing the aircraft to refuel in flight with a YY-20A tanker aircraft. This significantly extends its combat radius to more than 3,500km (2,175 miles).
The H-6N would play an important role in China’s nuclear deterrence, with the recent introduction of the JL-1 ALBM, which appeared at the country’s large-scale military parade in Beijing in September last year.


The JL-1 is China’s first long-range air-launched strategic ballistic missile mounted with a nuclear warhead, and its design is thought to be derived from the land-based DF-21 medium-range ballistic missile.
In contrast to the DF-21, whose range is 1,700km, the JL-1 reportedly achieves an operational reach of up to 8,000km. This intercontinental reach is made possible by combining the bomber’s extended combat radius with the initial altitude and speed provided at launch.
Strategic implications and future development
The delivery of the H-6N and JL-1 to the PLA Air Force made China one of only three countries worldwide to operate nuclear-capable strategic bombers. The other two are the United States and Russia.
Although China’s second-strike retaliatory capability relies primarily on its land-mobile ICBMs and ballistic missile submarines, the airborne platform adds operational flexibility.
By being able to scramble on early warning of an incoming attack, the H-6N can survive an initial enemy strike and deliver a retaliatory counter-attack.
The aerial refuelling capability of the H-6N extends the PLA’s operational reach into the western Pacific Ocean. When paired with the ALBM, the system provides a total strike radius exceeding 11,000km, giving the air force an intercontinental nuclear and conventional strike capability that could reach US territory.
The role played by bombers in the PLA, currently using the H-6N and other H-6 variants, is poised to evolve once the H-20 bomber, announced in 2016, completes development to become the country’s first domestically produced strategic bomber.
While there has been no official confirmation of the H-20’s development progress, multiple reports and computer-generated pictures have surfaced online suggesting it will have a flying wing design with at least 10 tonnes of payload for either conventional or nuclear weapons.
Despite multiple reports that the H-20 is nearing its maiden flight and public unveiling, there are no official updates as yet. The Pentagon’s annual China Military Power Report assesses that the H-20 is unlikely to make its operational debut until the 2030s.
