The People’s Liberation Army may be seeking to give its frontline mechanised units mobile protection against the kind of drone-saturated battlefield that could emerge in a Taiwan conflict.
Unverified images posted on mainland Chinese social media on August 29 show a new variant of the Type 19 amphibious 8x8 combat vehicle featuring a turret-mounted laser weapon and extra sensors alongside its standard autocannon.
Janes, an open-source defence intelligence provider, reported in 2023 that vehicles from the Type 19 family had entered service with the 73rd Group Army under the Eastern Theatre Command, which includes amphibious brigades expected to play a major role in a potential Taiwan landing operation.


Assuming the new variant retains the base platform’s amphibious capability, it could accompany frontline units in a possible landing operation, providing defence against uncrewed surveillance and loitering munitions.
Timothy Heath, founder of defence consultancy Perceptum and a former senior China analyst at Rand Corporation and for the US military, said it was difficult to know without more technical data whether the modifications affected the Type 19’s amphibious performance, but he believed operating the laser system while afloat “should be possible”.
The added weight could potentially be offset by reducing the crew size or other equipment, although the system would also need to be protected from salt water, he said.
Heath said that if those challenges could be overcome, the laser-based counter-drone system could be “very useful in a Taiwan conflict” in which Taiwanese forces might use drone swarms to target amphibious vehicles coming ashore.
The laser system’s low operating cost could make it particularly useful against such attacks, Heath added.
The development comes as Taipei moves to field drones on a much larger scale and expand the role of uncrewed systems across its military.
Beijing sees Taiwan as part of China to be reunited by force if necessary. Most countries, including the United States, do not recognise Taiwan as an independent state, but Washington is opposed to any attempt to take the self-governed island by force and is committed to supplying it with weapons.




On September 3, the island’s cabinet proposed a new NT$145.7 billion (US$4.6 billion) supplementary defence budget that includes more than 600 coastal surveillance and reconnaissance drones, and more than 40,000 coastal attack drones. The package still requires legislative approval.
Days earlier, lawmakers approved a separate six-year NT$240 billion framework for domestically produced drones after rejecting a competing government plan.
Taiwan has also reorganised parts of its military around drone warfare. The army finalised drone battalions across three operational combat zones in April, while its marine corps had earlier established a drone battalion as part of a restructuring that included disbanding tank and self-propelled artillery battalions.
During the island’s Han Kuang 42 exercise in August, Taiwanese aerial drone units carried out battlefield surveillance and reconnaissance, intelligence transmission and attack missions, according to the defence ministry.
For PLA forces trying to establish and expand a foothold on the island, the threat would extend beyond direct drone attacks. Uncrewed aircraft could also expose troop movements and positions and help cue artillery, missiles and other weapons against exposed forces.
Heath said the new Type 19 variant was consistent with lessons from the Russia-Ukraine war, where drones had proved effective against tanks, artillery and other frontline targets, increasing the value of mounting counter-drone systems directly on individual platforms.
He said the PLA had “almost certainly” drawn similar lessons from earlier fighting between Armenia and Azerbaijan, where drones had shown an ability to bypass traditional air-defence systems.
These lessons appear to be shaping a broader PLA effort to protect troops and vehicles from drones, using everything from added armour on tanks to lasers, microwave weapons and conventional guns or missiles.
The new Type 19 variant could represent a further step in that evolution: integrating sensors and different counter-drone systems onto an armoured platform capable of keeping pace with frontline mechanised formations.
Similar vehicle-mounted concepts are also emerging elsewhere, although the specific configurations remain at the prototype stage.
Heath pointed to Hanwha’s Tigon 8x8 armoured vehicle, unveiled this week with a 50-kilowatt counter-drone laser, and AeroVironment’s 20kW-class Locust system mounted on US Army Joint Light Tactical Vehicles.
Hanwha has built a prototype and plans serial production by the end of 2027, while JLTV-mounted Locust systems were delivered to the US Army in December under a prototyping programme.


But laser weapons also have limitations. Their effectiveness can be reduced by weather, smoke and dust, while power and cooling requirements are another constraint. Keeping the autocannon could therefore provide another option when conditions make the laser less effective.
While Janes assessed the newly seen vehicle as a Type 19-based counter-drone variant, it is not clear whether it is operational, undergoing trials or serving as a technology demonstrator.
