China is rapidly expanding a flight-test facility deep in its western desert, satellite imagery has revealed, a push that analysts say could help fast track the development of its next-generation military aircraft as air-power rivalry with the United States intensifies.
Latest satellite photos of the facility near Lop Nur, in China’s western Xinjiang region, show four large new hangars, new taxiway work, a circular pad believed to be an engine-run or turnaround area, and possible fuel-storage infrastructure, according to an August 28 analysis by defence website TWZ.
The expansion comes as China pursues multiple advanced combat-aircraft programmes at once, potentially giving it greater capacity to test sensitive designs and conduct simultaneous flight-test programmes away from routine observation.
Andreas Rupprecht, an aviation analyst and expert on the Chinese air force, said he was convinced Lop Nur would become the People’s Liberation Army’s new test centre for high-end next-generation aircraft.
But another expert familiar with Chinese military aviation, who asked not to be named, cautioned against drawing firm conclusions until the base expansion was complete.
The latest expansion began around August 2025, according to J. Michael Dahm, a retired US Navy intelligence officer and senior fellow for aerospace and China studies at the Mitchell Institute. That was when the large tailless sixth-generation PLA aircraft widely known as the J-36 was first observed there, Dahm wrote in an April assessment.
Another next-generation design, commonly referred to as the J-XDS or J-50, was spotted 17 days later, Dahm noted.




By February this year, China had added about 60,000 sq ft (5,570 square metres) of hangar space and more than 300,000 sq ft of other facilities, which Dahm said probably included test and evaluation facilities as well as personnel housing, effectively doubling the area of the base.
The site already had a 5km (3.1-mile) runway and was linked to China’s reusable spacecraft programme as far back as 2020.
Lop Nur’s remoteness is a key advantage, according to the experts. The base sits in a vast, sparsely populated expanse, offering ideal conditions for testing experimental aircraft away from populated areas and closer observation.
It could also ease pressure on existing facilities. An additional base could help separate programmes, reduce scheduling conflicts and allow a higher testing tempo, the anonymous expert said.
Multiple hangars could also support more than one flight-test programme concurrently, depending on aircraft size.
Rupprecht said the location could allow combined manoeuvres involving advanced crewed and collaborative combat aircraft without the safety constraints associated with testing near major cities, while the anonymous expert said the environment could benefit sensor and electronic-warfare testing because of limited interference.
“I don’t believe the new facility allows for anything that wasn’t already possible in Yanliang or Dingxin; it’s just that it’s even more remote, so you’re less likely to be observed,” Rupprecht said. Yanliang, in northwestern Shaanxi province, is home to China’s main flight-test establishment, while Dingxin in northern Inner Mongolia is used for military aircraft testing and exercises.
Dahm has argued that infrastructure offers a clearer signal of China’s long-term investment in advanced aircraft rather than sporadic prototype sightings.
The Lop Nur buildout is not happening in isolation. Dahm has documented major additions to manufacturing and testing infrastructure at Chengdu in southwest China, home of the J-20 and J-36 aircraft programmes, and a new production complex about 16km north of the existing plant in Shenyang, northeastern China, with around 4 million sq ft of manufacturing space.
Timothy Heath, founder of defence research firm Perceptum and a former senior China analyst for Rand Corporation and the US military, said such investment mattered because developing an advanced aircraft involved much more than producing an impressive prototype.


“The expanded flight test and development infrastructure is significant because it shows that China is refining and improving the quality of the aircraft that it manufactures,” Heath said.
“Testing and development is essential for new aircraft to maximise their potential, and the expanded facilities show China intends to ensure its combat aircraft are effective and not just showy parade pieces.”
Heath said appropriate infrastructure could shorten the time required for aircraft to become operational and improve their quality.
“The concurrent development of military aircraft programmes shows China has the ambition and resources to build a large and technologically advanced air force,” he said.
China and the United States are racing to develop a new generation of combat aircraft designed to operate alongside increasingly sophisticated uncrewed systems, sensors and long-range weapons.
China has not disclosed the missions, specifications or formal designations of the J-36 and J-XDS or J-50. The Pentagon’s latest China Military Power Report described the two sixth-generation aircraft as being in the “nascent stages of development” and expected to become operational by 2035.
The Lop Nur expansion has also revived speculation about China’s long-awaited H-20 stealth bomber, which has never been publicly unveiled and whose designation has not been officially confirmed.
TWZ noted that three new hangars on the southern apron each measured about 80 by 40 metres (262 by 131 feet), large enough for any aircraft in the PLA’s current inventory, including the H-6 strategic bomber with its 33-metre wingspan. They are also considerably wider than typical tactical-aircraft shelters, potentially accommodating future aircraft with much larger wingspans.
TWZ suggested that the hangars could be intended for the H-20, while stressing that this remained speculative.
Rupprecht similarly said the scale of some facilities suggested “something big is on the way”, with the H-20 the most plausible candidate, although he said that designation could now be out of date.
