China appears to be developing one of its largest fast combat-support ships for the future long-range operations of its Type 004 aircraft carrier, which is still under construction.
Commercial satellite imagery captured on July 2, provided by Planet Labs and published by defence news outlet TWZ, shows construction progress at the Comec Longxue shipyard near Guangzhou and reveals fresh details of the vessel’s layout.
The images offer insight into how Beijing plans to keep future strike groups supplied at sea.


The South China Morning Post first reported on the vessel in May.
Assessed as a larger variant of the People’s Liberation Army Navy’s existing Type 901 fast replenishment ship, the new vessel was “likely tailored to supporting more advanced aircraft carriers, such as the forthcoming Type 004 and their attendant battle groups”, Sean O’Connor, an imagery analyst with defence intelligence company Janes, said.
Unlike surface combatants that mainly require marine fuel and standard munitions, aircraft carriers demand a much broader range of specialised supplies: from aviation fuel and precision-guided weapons to spare parts for aircraft, and provisions for thousands of personnel.
The larger vessel’s expanded capacity would allow it to better meet those supply demands while simultaneously resupplying escorting guided-missile destroyers for “larger, more diverse carrier air wings”, O’Connor said.
Measuring about 271 metres (890 feet) in length with a beam of around 37 metres, the vessel will rank among the largest replenishment ships anywhere in the world when completed.
That would be a major increase on the Chinese navy’s existing Type 901, which is around 240 metres long with a beam of just under 31 metres and reported displacement of about 45,000 tonnes fully loaded.
It is not clear whether the vessel under construction is the first ship of a new replenishment class or is a one-off enlarged variant of the Type 901 design.
Janes, which first identified the vessel in satellite imagery captured in March, noted that its broad, slab-sided hull was characteristic of large fleet auxiliaries designed to carry substantial fuel, ammunition and dry stores for carrier strike groups.
Two months later, the SCMP reviewed a shipyard image released by China State Shipbuilding Corporation, showing the hull in a dry dock and its upper deck and island superstructures appearing largely complete – suggesting the vessel was almost ready to leave the dock for its final fit-out.
In its report on Friday, TWZ noted a bow section with wings for a large bridge and a mast above it, as well as a separate stern section with exhaust stacks positioned forward. Between the two, the outlet identified several pillar-like vertical structures close to both sides of the hull – a configuration consistent with at-sea refuelling and replenishment stations.
Fast combat support ships are critical for carrier operations as they extend the endurance of naval formations by allowing them to resupply while under way – a capability that lets carrier groups “operate further afield and for longer durations”, O’Connor said.
China’s carrier groups are supported by two 45,000-tonne Type 901 fast combat support ships, while much of the fleet relies on smaller Type 903-series replenishment oilers that have more limited capacity and speed.
Beijing’s expansion of its support fleet comes as the PLA Navy moves beyond its first generation of aircraft carriers towards larger, catapult-equipped vessels, such as the Fujian and the anticipated Type 004, which some analysts say could feature nuclear propulsion and show further advances in aviation capacity and endurance.
The apparent increase in size of the new support ship may suggest missions to aid larger, more capable carrier strike groups.
As carriers grow bigger and more sophisticated, so do their logistics needs, a dynamic reflected in a Chinese naval industry paper that examined concepts for next-generation aircraft carrier replenishment ships published in Shipborne Weapons journal in September.
In April, the China Maritime Studies Institute (CMSI) think tank, under the US Naval War College, published a translation of the Chinese paper, which argued that future Chinese carriers would place substantially greater demand on logistics than the existing Type 901 could support.


The paper called for larger replenishment vessels with increased capacity and proposed that ships could maintain speeds above 25 knots to accompany carrier strike groups while supporting sustained, high-intensity flight operations.
The author further outlined a layered logistics model in which Chinese frontline fast combat support ships remained with carrier groups while slower auxiliary vessels replenished them from behind, extending their reach during long-distance deployments.
Whether the vessel under construction follows the specific design concepts described in the translated paper remains unclear. However, its apparent size and presumed role are consistent with broader discussions among Chinese naval planners about the logistical requirements of future carrier operations.
