China has confirmed that President Xi Jinping will travel to New Delhi for the Brics summit this weekend, his first visit to India in close to seven years and the latest leg of the Chinese leader’s busiest run of summitry in years.
China’s foreign ministry said Xi would attend the summit at the invitation of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Xi is expected to have a sit-down with Modi on the sidelines of the summit.
The Chinese president’s visit to India follows closely on a packed diplomatic travel schedule that first took him to Kyrgyzstan for the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit, and then to Egypt last week for his first state visit there in a decade. He is expected to travel to Washington later this month to meet US President Donald Trump.
Russian President Vladimir Putin, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian will also be in Delhi for the Brics meeting, as will Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jnr.
Xi’s visit to India comes as the two Asian neighbours work to improve ties that soured after a deadly border clash in 2020 triggered a years-long military stand-off. The two sides have taken steps to strengthen relations, including resuming direct flights last October and restarting border trade last month.




The two sides also held boundary talks in Beijing in August, with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi describing China and India as important neighbours and saying that the development of China-India ties served the interests of the two countries as well as the Global South.
The boundary talks between Wang and Indian National Security Adviser Ajit Doval produced a series of consensus points, including commitments to keep the frontier quiet, create new working groups, add military communication channels, and continue pilgrimage, border trade, and river talks. The next round will be held in India in 2027.
Xi’s trip comes as Beijing puts greater emphasis on developing ties with its neighbours and emerging economies. Like the SCO, Brics is often viewed as a platform for Beijing to advance its ambitions for a multipolar world and cement its position as a leader of the Global South.
But it also comes hard on the heels of a recommendation from India’s Serious Fraud Investigation Office for a detailed investigation into Chinese tech company Xiaomi.
Asked about the recommendation on Thursday, Chinese foreign ministry spokesman Guo Jiakun said China-India economic and trade cooperation was mutually beneficial in nature.
He also urged India to provide “a fair, just, transparent and non-discriminatory business environment” for companies.
India tightened scrutiny of Chinese investments in 2020 under its Press Note 3 policy, which requires government approval for investments from countries sharing a land border with India, widely seen as targeting Chinese capital. Several Chinese firms have faced tax, foreign exchange and compliance investigations in recent years.
