Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi has urged Washington to help “remove interference and overcome obstacles” to high-level exchanges as the two sides prepare for President Xi Jinping’s expected visit to the US next month.
Meeting US ambassador David Perdue in Beijing on Wednesday, Wang said both sides should put the Xi-Trump consensus into practice, focus on a positive agenda and manage differences to keep ties “stable, healthy and sustainable”, according to China’s foreign ministry.
In a social media post, Perdue later described the talks as part of “preparations for President Xi’s reciprocal visit to Washington”.
Wang’s message comes ahead of an expected September 24 meeting between Xi and US President Donald Trump at the White House.
Citing “various risks and challenges” in the relationship, Wang said that “under the guidance of the two heads of state, both sides are working to build a constructive China-US relationship of strategic stability”.
“Facts have proven that improving and developing China-US relations, peaceful coexistence on the basis of mutual respect, and then win-win cooperation serve the fundamental interests of the two peoples and meet the common expectations of the international community,” he said.
Perdue struck a similarly conciliatory note, calling Trump’s May visit to China “very successful” and saying Washington was ready to “strengthen communication, advance cooperation” and prepare for “important high-level interactions in the next stage”.
The US ambassador said the two sides should build a constructive and stable relationship “on the basis of respect and reciprocity”, according to the Chinese foreign ministry.
On Thursday, Perdue wrote on social media that he had held “productive discussions this week” with Wang, Foreign Vice-Minister Ma Zhaoxu, and assistant foreign ministers Hong Lei and Cai Wei.
He added that the two sides were “working together to achieve a constructive relationship of strategic stability with fairness and reciprocity”.


Since Trump and Xi’s meeting in Busan, South Korea, in October last year, the China-US relationship has held to a fragile trade truce while new disputes over Iran sanctions, visas, technology and restrictions targeting alleged forced labour have added friction.
Both sides still say they want “strategic stability” and are working on trade and investment arrangements, but few concrete breakthroughs have been reached.
This week, the US Treasury launched what Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent called “Operation Economic Outcast”.
The package hit about 60 entities allegedly tied to Iranian oil, missiles, nuclear procurement and cyber activity, including firms and a tanker linked to mainland China and Hong Kong. It stopped short of sanctioning big Chinese banks.
Beijing called the measures “illegal unilateral sanctions” and said it would “take all necessary measures” to protect its interests.
