Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has urged China to play a “strong diplomatic role” to help end the war between Russia and Ukraine, bolstering his call by highlighting national day congratulations from Chinese President Xi Jinping.
“We count on further cooperation and on China playing a strong diplomatic role in bringing Russia’s war against our country to an end,” the Ukrainian leader wrote on social media on Wednesday. “Peace can be our shared achievement.”
In his posts, Zelensky attached copies of Chinese and Ukrainian versions of a letter Xi sent to congratulate Ukraine on its Independence Day.


It is the second consecutive year Beijing has sent Kyiv such a public congratulatory message following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.
Beijing has not published the latest letter. Xi and Zelensky last spoke during a phone call in April 2023.
“China-Ukraine friendship serves the fundamental interests of both peoples. China is ready to work with Ukraine to continue upholding the principles of mutual respect and equality and mutual benefit to promote the long-term, healthy and stable development of bilateral relations,” Xi said in the letter posted by Zelensky.
More than four years into the Russia-Ukraine war, ground fighting continues and the humanitarian crisis is worsening, with no major diplomatic breakthrough in sight.
China’s position on the conflict has remained under close international scrutiny, while its closer partnership with Russia has been seen as a major stumbling block in its efforts to mend ties with the European Union amid its strategic rivalry with the United States.
China has repeatedly affirmed that its relationship with Russia is not directed at any third party and that it consistently supports a political settlement of the war through dialogue and negotiations.
“Dialogue and negotiations are the only viable way to resolve the Ukraine issue,” Fu Cong, Beijing’s permanent representative to the United Nations, told a Security Council session on Monday.
He said China had maintained “close communication with the parties concerned”.
In an article published on the Ukrainian embassy website on Sunday, Kyiv’s top envoy to Beijing, Olexander Nechytaylo, urged China to play “a more active role” in advancing the peace process, protecting global food security, restoring a reliable grain corridor in the Black Sea and guaranteeing freedom of civilian navigation.
“Ukraine is convinced that China has sufficient international weight, political authority, and diplomatic tools to make its contribution to bringing peace closer, more tangible,” he wrote.
“We are open to a substantive dialogue with China on ways to achieve a just peace. Such a dialogue must be based on realities, international law and respect for the legitimate interests of the Ukrainian people.”


In a note posted on social media on August 18, Ding Xiaoxing, a research professor at the Beijing-based China Institutes of Contemporary International Relations, wrote that neither Russia nor Ukraine was likely to achieve a complete military victory in the long run.
The “spirit of Anchorage” – a vague claim of progress said to come out of a summit between US President Donald Trump and his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin, in Alaska a year ago for a settlement – appeared to have failed, he said.
“[That process] over-relied on unilateral mediation by major powers, ignored the core interests of all parties and lacked a binding mechanism”, added Ding, who also serves as deputy secretary general of the academic committee at the think tank affiliated with the Ministry of State Security, China’s top intelligence agency.
