Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi’s coming trip to New York and Canada is expected to lay the groundwork for President Xi Jinping’s state visit to the US and warmer ties with Ottawa.
China’s foreign ministry said on Friday that Wang would chair a high-level meeting of the UN Security Council in New York on May 26, followed by a visit to Canada from May 28 to 30.
The New York leg of Wang’s trip follows less than two weeks after the Beijing summit between Xi and US President Donald Trump. There, the two leaders projected a warm rapport and discussed a potential state visit by Xi to Washington in September – indicating efforts by the rival powers to stabilise fraught ties.
Wang confirmed last week that Xi would visit the US in the autumn, following Trump’s official invitation to meet on September 24. It would mark the first state visit by a Chinese leader to the United States since September 2015.
Wang’s chairing of the UN meeting reinforces China’s diplomatic push to project itself as a defender of global peace and the multipolar order, and as a stabilising force in a turbulent world.
Meanwhile, whether withdrawing from multilateral institutions, capturing Venezuelan leader Nicolas Maduro, or waging war alongside Israel against Iran, Washington increasingly stands accused of undermining the rules-based international order.


The meeting in New York will be a high-level open debate, themed on “upholding the purposes and principles of the UN Charter and strengthening the UN-centred international system”, according to foreign ministry spokesman Guo Jiakun.
China holds the rotating presidency of the Security Council for May. The position rotates monthly among the council’s 15 member states in English alphabetical order.
Guo said: “We hope that parties will renew the lofty goals enshrined in the UN Charter, reiterate their firm commitments to multilateralism and unite closer together and step up to the responsibility to revitalise the status and role of the UN and put greater synergy for reforming and improving global governance.”
Foreign ministers and senior representatives of multiple countries have confirmed their attendance and UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres will brief the event, he added.
The last time China held the Security Council presidency was in February 2025. Wang visited New York on that occasion as well. He met American business and think tank leaders, urging Washington and Beijing to find a way to “get along” and stabilise ties.
The top Chinese diplomat will also attend a meeting of the Group of Friends of Global Governance in New York on May 28, according to Guo, in addition to meetings with Guterres and foreign ministers from other countries.
The Group of Friends of Global Governance is a UN-based platform that China launched in December last year to implement the Global Governance Initiative, a diplomatic framework espousing core principles such as sovereign equality and multilateralism.
Wang will then visit Canada at the invitation of his Canadian counterpart, Anita Anand, Guo said.
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney visited China in January, the first such trip by a Canadian leader since 2017, marking a diplomatic reset after years of discord. Ottawa is also seeking to diversify its economic relations and reduce its reliance on the US market.
