However, observers said Trump’s pledge to plant the American flag on Mars and build the world’s “strongest military” was likely to escalate the big power rivalry.

China’s foreign ministry said on Tuesday that the country was ready to promote greater progress in the relationship with the United States.

“China stands ready to work with the new US government under the strategic guidance of the two presidents,” ministry spokesman Guo Jiakun said after being asked whether Beijing would invite Trump to visit.

“[China] would follow the principles of peaceful coexistence, manage mutual differences and promote greater progress in bilateral relations from a new starting point”, Guo added.

In his inaugural speech, Trump downplayed his stance on China and other foreign policy issues, while emphasising domestic priorities and his vision of a “golden age” for the United States.

He also promised to “overhaul” the US trade system to protect American workers and families and issued a general warning about tariffs.
