Chinese actor Wang Xing, missing on Thai trip, rescued after Myanmar scam hub scare

A Chinese actor reported missing at the Thailand-Myanmar border has been found after fears that he might have entered a Myanmese city known as an online scam hub.

Wang Xing was rescued on Tuesday afternoon, the Chinese embassy in Bangkok confirmed in a statement on its website.

“According to the Thai authorities, Chinese citizen Wang has been successfully rescued at 7pm local time on [January 7]. The Chinese embassy and consulates in Thailand express gratitude to the Thai government and other relevant parties for their efforts and effective work in this regard,” the embassy said.

No further details were provided.

Earlier in the day, China’s consulate in the northwestern Thai city of Chiang Mai said that a Chinese national reported missing on Friday had been found by Thai immigration authorities.

“The immigration authorities have picked up the person concerned, and we are conducting relevant inquiries according to rules,” it said in a statement.

Wang, an actor also known by his stage name Xing Xing, lost contact with his girlfriend and family members in Mae Sot district of northwest Thailand, according to a social media post by his girlfriend. The area borders Myanmar’s Myawaddy, a city known as a hub for scam outfits.
