Beijing has sanctioned two Canadian institutes and several individuals concerned with Tibet and Xinjiang issues as tensions with Ottawa continue to worsen.
The Uygur Rights Advocacy Project, the Canada Tibet Committee and 20 people from the two organisations had been placed on the sanctions list, the Chinese foreign ministry said on Sunday, citing China’s anti-sanctions law.
Their assets within China have been frozen, all transactions and cooperation projects have been banned, and persons on the list have been barred from entering China, including Hong Kong and Macau, from Saturday, according to the ministry.
Of the persons on the list, 15 are members of the Uygur Rights Advocacy Project and the rest are from the Canada Tibet Committee.
The move comes after Canada imposed sanctions on eight former and current senior Chinese officials earlier this month, citing alleged human rights violations in Xinjiang – home to the mainly Muslim Uygur ethnic minority group – and in Tibet.
Chen Quanguo, the former Communist Party chief of Xinjiang, and Wu Yingjie, former party head of Tibet, were both on the sanctions list released by Canada on December 10.
Allegations by the United States and its Western allies of human rights abuses in Tibet and Xinjiang have been repeatedly denied by Beijing, which has urged the West to stop interfering in China’s internal affairs.
Beijing also said its measures in Tibet and Xinjiang were meant to maintain stability and boost the local economy.
Ties between Beijing and Ottawa have worsened since December 2018, after Canada detained Huawei chief financial officer Meng Wanzhou on fraud charges at the request of the US, and China then detained two Canadian residents on spying charges. All three have since been released, but the tensions have yet to ease.


Canada has also accused China of meddling in its domestic elections, and expelled a Chinese diplomat last year. Beijing denies any interference.
In October, Canada mirrored US moves to announce additional tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles, aluminium and steel, and China responded with an anti-dumping probe against Canadian rapeseed and chemical products.
Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi in July urged Canada to reflect on the “severely strained” ties, as he met his Canadian counterpart Melanie Joly in Beijing for what was the first face-to-face talks at this level in nearly seven years.
