'Third party venue' for Xi-Ma meeting
The mainland's top Taiwan affairs negotiator, Chen Deming, said he had "high hopes" for a suggestion that Xi Jinping and Taiwanese leader Ma Ying-jeou meet at a "third-party venue" outside the mainland and Taiwan. Chen said the term "does not necessarily refer to Hong Kong", Taiwan's United Daily News reported. "It could also be other places; [we] need to think about it ." Beijing has seemed cool to talk of a Xi-Ma meeting this year at the Asia-Pacific Economic Co-operation summit, which the capital is hosting. Staff Reporter
 
Economist warns of 'external shocks'
Justin Lin Yi-fu, a Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference delegate and former World Bank chief economist, warned yesterday that China should be prepared for a possible prolonged period of "external shocks" to its economy. Lin said that developed economies, including Europe, Japan and the United States, have not yet made the reforms necessary to fix their economic problems since the global financial crisis five years ago. Xi pledges to protect doctors from attacks
President Xi Jinping vowed yesterday during a discussion with Guizhou delegates to the National People's Congress to maintain order in hospitals and protect medical staff from physical assault. "Any acts of harm inflicted on medical staff must be seriously dealt with in accordance with the law," Xi said. Reporter tries to hand governor 'seized' bribe
A reporter tried to hand the governor of Shanxi province an allegedly intercepted bribe of 20,000 yuan (HK$25,000) during a press conference, the People's Daily reported on its website. The reporter held out the cash and claimed it had been given to a retired village party head in Yulin . He said the local authorities refused to handle the money and hoped the governor could pass it on to higher authorities. The press conference's host said the reporter's question was irrelevant.
