Three blasts take Myanmar bombing spree to Chinese border

Three bombs exploded at a Myanmese border town with China, killing one person, police said on Thursday.

The blasts in Namkham in Myanmar’s Shan State, kilometres away from Yunnan province, are the latest in a series of unexplained explosions to hit Myanmar since last Friday.

One person was killed and at least six people were injured in the blasts, a duty officer at a local police station said.

The country has been hit by at least nine small bombs in the last week, killing three people and wounding several others. No group has yet claimed responsibility.

While earlier attacks have so far occurred in the central parts of the country, the blasts in Namkham in the night from Wednesday to Thursday are the first to occur near the Chinese border.

The explosions came hours after President Xi Jinping met with the commander-in-chief of the country’s armed forces, Senior General Min Aung Hlaing, in Beijing on Wednesday. Xi called on him to “soon realise peace and stability” in the country, according to Xinhua.
