Landslides and floods caused by non-stop monsoon rains have killed at least 12 people in the Philippines, while eight more were missing and thirteen injured, authorities said.
More than half a million people in 33 provinces have been affected by the southwest monsoon that has been enhanced by two tropical cyclones, according to the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council.
The agency also reported hundreds of damaged homes and infrastructure, with about 98,000 displaced from their homes.
Tens of thousands were evacuated to hundreds of government-run emergency shelters, Laurence Mina of the government’s Office of Civil Defence said.

The deaths were primarily recorded in the provinces of Benguet, Rizal and Batangas, on the nation’s main island, Luzon.
In its mountainous city of Baguio, four people died and six others were missing after a landslide buried several houses, its public information office said in a Facebook post.
A frantic search for the missing was continuing on Monday despite intermittent rain.

Three people were dug out alive by rescuers and taken to hospital, Baguio officials said.
Around 150 rescuers were working on rotation as search and retrieval operation continues, it said, adding that a dozen other landslide incidents were monitored in Baguio amid continued heavy rain.
Other causes of death included electrocution and drowning.
President Ferdinand Marcos Jnr on Monday ordered government workers to work from home, and officials to implement alternative learning modes for schools in Metro Manila and more than a dozen provinces as heavy rainfall flooded towns and major thoroughfares.
Water reached waist height in some parts. Ferry services were disrupted in affected regions. The coastguard said operations had been suspended at 20 ports in the central and eastern Philippines.

The country’s weather service forecast further heavy rainfall.
Tropical Storm Dolphin, which dumped heavy rain in eastern China, did not directly hit the Philippines but helped to intensify seasonal monsoon rains that set off flooding and landslides.
