Super Typhoon Fung-wong slammed into the Philippines’ eastern seaboard on Sunday, the national weather service said, after killing at least two people and forcing more than a million to evacuate vulnerable areas at risk of flash floods, landslides and tidal surges.

The storm crossed over the north of the archipelago’s most populous island Luzon, weather bureau PAGASA said, with torrential rain, sustained winds of 185kph (115 mph) and gusts of up to 230kph (140 mph). It was the 21st storm this year to hit a nation only just recovering from Typhoon Kalmaegi, which left 224 dead in the Philippines and five in Vietnam.

The typhoon, locally known as Uwan, is the biggest to threaten the Philippines this year and could cover two-thirds of the Southeast Asian archipelago with its 1,600km (994 mile) wide rain and wind band.

Authorities warned of a “high risk of life-threatening and damaging storm surge” of more than three metres (10 feet) along the coasts of more than 20 provinces and regions, including metropolitan Manila.
