Malaysian graduate jailed four years for possession of IS-related material
Graduate pleaded guilty, insisting he had the obtained the material while trying to find out more about the situation in Syria
A jobless graduate in the Malaysian capital was sentenced to four years jail by the country’s High Court for possessing Islamic State (IS) related items, such as an IS sticker and two books titled ‘Tarbiyah Jihadiyah’.
Mohammad Saufi Ibrahim, 22, who pleaded guilty to the charge, apologised for committing the offence, admitting that it was wrong.
He had also through his lawyer Mohd Imran Mohd Farouk vowed never to repeat the offence.
“He did it out of curiosity and he admits that it was wrong to do so.
“He was looking through and wants to know what is happening there in Syria and why are the children suffering there,” Mohd Imran said, adding that the accused was a bright student and was planning to pursue a degree.
Judge Datuk Mohd Sofian Abd Razak ordered for the accused’s sentence to run from the date of his arrest on July 15, 2016.
