SIHH 2019: Ulysse Nardin’s new futuristic Freak X is a triumph of the imagination
Lightweight, more compact model has a new manufacture flying carousel baguette movement rotating around its own axis, serving as the hands on this dial-less timepiece
Ulysse Nardin has launched a compact extension of its famed Freak series, crafting its new Freak X out of carbonium, a new tough material fit for a tech-heavy watch. Here is an exclusive look at this new generation of futuristic complication timepieces.
The Freak redefined time for a generation of watchmakers and collectors, removing hands from the dial and replacing them with the watch rotating mechanism. The Freak X is an extension and continuation of this spirit, using technology to create designs that were rarely even a figment of anyone’s imagination.
The Freak X is 2mm smaller than its predecessor at 43mm. It sports an new manufacture flying carousel baguette movement rotating around its own axis, serving as hands on this dial-less timepiece, with a 72-hour power reserve.
The Freak X retains the same bezel time adjustment mechanism, free of a conventional crown. Its baguette movement counts the hours with every full rotation; the central bridge doubles as the minute hand while the wheels provide a reading of the hours. Another key element of a conventional timepiece, a dial, is also missing.
The highlight of this new Freak X is its incredible light weight. Now fitted with super-light balance wheel in silicium with the option of a black Carbonium case that has been redesigned to bring a sleeker look to the crownless silhouette.
Ulysse Nardin offers three other alternatives – in titanium, in titanium with DLC or PVD finish, and a rose gold version.
