Italian-born designer Alessandra Rich established her eponymous label in 2010. Since then, she has built a loyal following thanks to her feminine frocks loved by women who want to look pretty but not too precious. Her designs have appeared on red carpets around the world, worn by everyone from Kate Middleton to Natalie Portman. Here, the designer, who is based in Milan and London, shares her favourite finds in the British capital and beyond.
Stars of the silver screen

I’m obsessed with Alfred Hitchcock’s films and the “Hitchcock blondes”, from Grace Kelly to Ingrid Bergman. Icy, sophisticated, passionate, never out of place – the women in Hitchcock’s movies are so cool and sexy. I never get tired of looking at them as inspiration for my idea of femininity. Look at Grace Kelly in [1955’s] To Catch a Thief, in lovely pale pink and glacial blue, with diamonds glittering at her neck. Wonderful!

I don’t really follow contemporary fashion on Instagram. I prefer fashion archive accounts, or interiors. There’s a richness and a slight imperfection that feels much more inspiring than something overly polished. Occasionally, I find myself drawn to something completely different, like @yalecleaners. It’s a dry cleaning account that specialises in vintage wedding dresses. There’s something very satisfying in the process of it – the beginning, the transformation, the end. I find it relaxes me!
Beauty boosts

I don’t believe in only using expensive products: some of the best things are very simple. I always come back to Avène Cicalfate for the skin, and Homeoplasmine [by Boiron] for the lips. For a skin glow, I use Weleda Skin Food. Other products I love are Restorative Hydration Cream and Recovery Night Complex, both by Calecim. Decorté AQ Meliority Radiance Repair Foaming Face Wash is my indulgence – it’s expensive but you need just a drop. For a very subtle fragrance, I use the Byredo Suede hand cream like a body lotion.
Favourite spot in town

I’ve been based around Mayfair for a long time, on Mount Street, so it feels less like a destination and more like a village. I like that familiarity – where everything is slightly known. My favourite restaurant is Scott’s. The museums are always a source of inspiration. London does them exceptionally well: there is a sense of quiet continuity, but also of constant renewal. Recently I saw the Cartier exhibition at the Victoria and Albert Museum, which was extraordinary in its precision, and the Cecil Beaton exhibition at the National Portrait Gallery, which felt very London in its elegance and wit.
Sensory souvenirs

I like giving things that have a sensory element, something you remember rather than just keep. Incense from Oneironaut is very particular, almost transportive. Or tea from Fortnum & Mason – it’s something very English, but also genuinely good.
Accessories

I have a vintage Cartier watch. I also wear vintage Yves Saint Laurent reading glasses – they were my father’s. I like objects that feel permanent, slightly worn, not precious in a new way. They become part of your daily life rather than something you think about.
Luxury stays

Claridge’s represents a kind of London glamour that hasn’t tried too hard to evolve. It still feels like itself. Hoshinoya Tokyo is very precise, very quiet. Being in Tokyo adds to it: the whole environment feels intentional. It’s a beautiful contrast with the busyness of the city.
Bucket list

Kyoto, for discipline and ritual. It feels very far from the pace of fashion, which is exactly why I’m drawn to it.
Style icon

Charlotte Rampling – there’s a kind of severity and independence in the way she dresses. It never feels decorative. There’s always something slightly distant, which I find very elegant.
Statement style

There is always a tension between femininity and control – something that appears quite proper at first glance but reveals something slightly subversive. A black midi silk crepe de chine dress, sometimes with a white collar, sometimes not, is a [staple] of my collections – it is always appropriate and feminine.
