On August 31, New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art and John Galliano announced in a joint statement that the exhibition John Galliano: Horizons – which was scheduled to open in May next year and would have provided the theme for the next Met Gala – has been cancelled in light of the 65-year-old designer’s past antisemitic remarks and subsequent conviction in France in 2011.
“I remain fully accountable for the pain caused by my words in the past, particularly the hurt I caused to the Jewish and Asian communities, and I remain deeply sorry for it,” Galliano stated, with Met trustee Anna Wintour calling his decision “very courageous and a measure of the man he is”.

This exhibition would have made Galliano the third-ever living designer to receive a solo show at the Costume Institute. Now, it has brought renewed attention to his personal life, including his long-time partner, Alexis Roche.

He’s French
Alexis Roche was born in Provence, in southeastern France. He and Galliano share a stone farmhouse in Auvergne, in central France, where Roche’s grandmother was born, per Vogue. Roche studied art and literature before turning his hand to fashion, per his bio on the artist agency Michele Filomeno.
He’s a fashion stylist and brand consultant
Roche moved first to London, then to Paris in 2003, where he began working as a brand and celebrity consultant for Dior under Galliano. Following the designer’s dismissal from Dior as a result of his antisemitic remarks, Roche left the maison as well, per the Observer.
