Nichapat Suphap is undoubtedly one of the most powerful movers and shakers in show business today. The Thai editor, entrepreneur and founder of The Venture Management works with the hottest Asian stars of the moment, putting actors and now luxury brand ambassadors like Vachirawit “Bright” Chivaaree and Nattawin “Apo” Wattanagitiphat on the global map.

She’s also a Met Gala regular, becoming the first-ever Thai attendee when she wore a purple gown designed by friend Peter Dundas to the notoriously exclusive event back in 2018. Suphap topped that by wearing a cotton candy-like technicolour number by Tomo Koizumi for the camp-themed 2019 gala, becoming the first person to wear a custom piece by the brand.
And for the 2023 Met Gala, which paid tribute to legendary designer Karl Lagerfeld, Suphap opted for classic black-and-white elegance in a custom halter ball gown by Louis Vuitton.

This year, Suphap chose to work with Hong Kong-born couture designer Robert Wun for her custom gown, taking Style behind the scenes for an exclusive look at the design process. Wun also dressed Blackpink star Lisa – who also hails from Thailand – for the event.
Additionally, Suphap tapped American kinetic artist Casey Curran, who previously collaborated with designer Iris van Herpen on businesswoman Mona Patel’s look at the 2024 Met Gala, to work on the literal finishing touches for her 2026 Met Gala gown. Curran crafted a series of sculptural moving hands to go with her all-black, floor-length dress.

Suphap told Style that she first reached out to Wun when she learned that the theme this year was “Fashion is Art”. Andrew Bolton, the head curator at the Met’s Costume Institute, bought three dresses from Wun to show in the accompanying exhibition, titled “Costume Art”.
“Robert had me show him the gowns that I liked from his collections,” Suphap said, adding that she was most drawn to a look that reminded her of the Schiaparelli gown she wore to the 2022 Met Gala. “It is similar, but I don’t care,” she laughed.

Suphap was in Rome visiting the Sistine Chapel when inspiration struck. “That image [The Creation of Adam, a fresco painting by Michelangelo], and the space between the two hands where life is imagined into being, stayed with me,” she mused. “I began thinking about the body not just as something we dress, but as something that creates.” The hands, she added, are “the quiet force behind everything we build”.
“In the painting, life is created through touch. For me, this dress is about creating myself through my own hands.”

From there, Suphap was able to hand a rough idea of her vision for the overall look over to Curran. “Nichapat had seen the work I did with Mona and she was really looking for something that had that little extra wow factor,” Curran told Style. “One of the interesting things about what I do, specifically, is taking my idiosyncratic approach to kinetics and fashion, and then just pouring that into another designer’s aesthetic, bringing an extra dimension to a garment through motion.”

Curran said hearing Wun’s name also immediately conjured up the image of hands – a frequent motif in the designer’s collections. “From there, I worked to put all the mechanics into the hand, building the joints and the very small mechanism inside that activates it. It’s all self-contained,” Curran added.

Putting together all the moving parts of Suphap’s look, however, proved to be the most difficult part of the design process. The entrepreneur recalled the stressful weeks leading up to the Gala, working with Curran to ensure the hands – which could not be stitched onto the gown for fear of damaging the garment – could be pinned on instead. The two worked together to perfect the hand prototypes, sending packages back and forth – only for the hands to get lost in the mail along the way.

“We had issues with USPS [United States Postal Service], which is very unfortunate,” Curran quipped. “This is my unsponsored plug for FedEx.” Suphap, who said she and her assistant had to go to Seattle for a day just to retrieve the lost package, admits she broke down crying many times throughout the ordeal. “I have PTSD from this,” she laughed.

What a relief, then, when everything finally came together at the last minute. For Suphap, those last moments getting dressed for fashion’s biggest night made all the sweat and tears worth it. “Six months later, my vision comes to life,” she said. “A reminder that who we become is something we make.”

Suphap praised Curran for bringing motion to her vision. “Casey is such an artist,” she exclaimed. “The hands on the dress are alive because creation is never still. It’s something you’re constantly building, shaping and rewriting. So this dress is about ownership – building my story and fulfilling my dream with my own hands.”
