Known for her boho-chic aesthetic and love for vintage fashion, Anna Sui is a New York icon. The Detroit native has called the city home since the 1970s, when she studied at Parsons School of Design and met one of her long-time friends, photographer Steven Meisel. Sui established her eponymous label in 1981, eventually expanding into beauty and fragrance.

This month, the designer is releasing a book, The Nineties x Anna Sui, paying homage to that pivotal decade in her career. Here, she shares her favourite finds from Manhattan and beyond.
What I’m watching

My all-time favourite films are Priest of Love, The Night, Juliet of the Spirits, The Damned, The Leopard and Performance. England’s Dreaming; Please Kill Me; Mabel Dodge Luhan: New Woman, New Worlds; When Women Ran Fifth Avenue: Glamour and Power at the Dawn of American Fashion are some of my favourite books. I’m currently reading New Worlds and The Life of an Outsider.
Instagram accounts I follow

I follow antique fabric stores @tinseltrading and @starchedandcrumpled, vintage dealers @fd_gallery and @josephsaidianandsonsjewelry, and @rg_bunny2 and @weirdtvland.
My go-to beauty products

From my line, I use the Sui Black – Cream Blush, which looks black but blends to a blush, and Sui Black – Rouge, which also looks black and goes on as a blush. For skincare, I use Clearstem and for hair, R+Co.
Places I love in New York

Daily Provisions has the most delicious breakfast. Try The Lumberjack – a bacon, egg and cheese sandwiched between a maple cruller.
Morgenstern’s Finest Ice Cream – The Vietnamese Coffee flavour is my favourite. I love the collaboration with Russ & Daughters.
John Derian for his découpage and his selection of vintage stuffed animals from Anke Drechsel; Astier de Villatte ceramics, pillows and pouches; Antoinette Poisson cushions and papers; and Lisa Corti textiles and cushions.
The Frick Museum has undergone a glorious renovation! I love the Vermeers, the Gainsboroughs and the Fragonards.
My favourite jewellery pieces

My black pearls from Tahiti, from Robert Wan, who married my dad’s cousin.
Where I love to stay

Il San Pietro Positano in Italy is breathtaking inside and out. Anita Pallenberg, Keith Richards and Mick Jagger stayed here in the 70s. Halekulani Hotel in Honolulu is my ultimate Hawaiian fantasy, while I love the Pueblo Deco design of the Arizona Biltmore.
Where I’d love to go next

While buying suzani [local textiles], I met a man who rode through Uzbekistan on horseback – it sounded so swashbuckling.
My style icon

I have admired Anita Pallenberg and tried to imitate her amazing style since seeing her in Performance. We became good friends in the 90s. It was so fun, inspiring, and I learned so much shopping with her at antique markets and fashion shops.
A piece I’m proud of

My favourite autumn piece is this faux fur trim coat, a perennial favourite.
