The first half of the year has been an exciting time for the film industry and movie buffs, with a mix of adaptations, biopics and new projects from both renowned and up-and-coming directors. Among these highly anticipated projects is Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey, which just released worldwide on Friday, July 17.
The cast and crew of the US$250 million film kicked off their press tour in early July. One woman has been by the director’s side: his wife, Emma Thomas, who just so happens to be the film’s producer.

The Hollywood power couple have built an impressive career together, with Thomas producing all of Nolan’s feature films since his 1998 debut, Following.
So what do we know about this renowned film producer, who won the Academy Award for best picture in 2024 with blockbuster Oppenheimer? Read on to find out.
What are Emma Thomas’ movie credits?

Thomas was born in London on December 9, 1971. She studied ancient history at University College London, where she and Nolan reportedly met in 1989 on the first day of their residence hall move-in.
Nolan later introduced Thomas to the university’s film society, sparking her interest in filmmaking. “I started producing short films for Chris without really understanding what I was doing,” Thomas told Vanity Fair in 2018. “I just thought I was helping out.”
Upon her graduation, Thomas’ father tried to convince her to follow in his footsteps and join the civil service, but she decided to enter the film industry with Nolan instead. The duo’s first feature film, Following, was shot with friends on weekends on a limited budget of US$6,000, according to a 2024 Variety interview with Thomas.
Emma Thomas was made a dame

Nolan and Thomas have come a long way since working together on their first film. In 2001, the duo founded film production company Syncopy Inc. They kept the company small, with only four employees, including themselves. “We’re not empire builders,” Thomas said in her Vanity Fair interview. “We’re about the individual film.”
Apart from Oppenheimer, the couple is behind other award-winning hits, including Inception, Interstellar and Dunkirk.
Thomas has described her role as a producer of Nolan’s films as working around “what he needs”. She oversees a project from start to finish: “It’s like we’re shepherding something from the beginning,” she told Variety.
In recognition of her work, Thomas was named an honorary fellow of her alma mater in 2013, and awarded a damehood from King Charles in 2024, while her husband was knighted for their extraordinary contribution to film.
How many kids do Christopher Nolan and Emma Thomas have?

Nolan and Thomas married in 1997. They have a daughter, Flora, and three sons, Oliver, Rory and Magnus.
The Nolan children all made cameos in their parents’ films when they were young. The earliest cameo is of Oliver in The Prestige, followed by Magnus in Inception. Rory appeared in The Dark Knight Rises, while Flora showed up in Interstellar and Oppenheimer.
Thomas is not only the lead producer on set, but she also runs the household. “Sometimes people will say to me, ‘Gosh, how do you do it? You have four kids and you make these big films,’” she told Vanity Fair. “But the fact that I work with my children’s father means I can bring my kids to work. I have a massive advantage.”

The filmmakers seem to have passed down their talent to their children, as all four of them had a hand in the making of The Odyssey. Their roles were scattered across different departments, working as assistants in costume, production and art.
The family leads a relatively private life, with the director famously known for not owning a smartphone, and instead preferring to hand-deliver scripts to actors. “My kids would probably say I’m a complete Luddite,” he told The Hollywood Reporter in 2023.
Nolan and Thomas are also not on social media, while their children keep their accounts private.
