The highly anticipated second season of Lee Sung Jin’s Emmy-winning comedy drama, Beef, starring Oscar Isaac, Carey Mulligan, Youn Yuh-jung, Song Kang-ho, Cailee Spaeny, and Charles Melton, landed on Netflix on April 16 and immediately made a splash. The internet is buzzing with the latest instalment of the anthology, and it is already the fifth most-watched TV show on the platform at the time of writing, according to streaming data collection website FlixPatrol.

Alongside the acting powerhouses leading the show are breakout stars Matthew Kim, aka Big Matthew or BM, and Seoyeon Jang, who are going viral for their roles as Woosh and Eunice, respectively. The former is a tennis player and instructor with a connection to Youn’s Chairwoman Park, while the latter serves as her assistant.

What’s Seoyeon Jang’s background?

Jang was born on February 15, 1995, in South Korea. Her parents raised her in London alongside her brother, per The Hollywood Reporter. “I had the best of both worlds growing up,” she told Marie Claire, emphasising that her background helped her relate to Eunice.
She attended London’s ArtsEd school, studying acting and dance, and moved back to South Korea when she started training to become a K-pop idol. She graduated from Korea University in 2024. Her family is currently still based in London.
Her acting journey

Although Jang started out as a K-pop trainee, she found herself drawn more to acting. Setting her idol aspirations aside, she started working in the K-drama industry, making her debut in One Fine Week in 2019. She went on to star in a string of hit shows, such as Snowdrop (with Blackpink’s Jisoo) and Good Partner, and even shared the screen with Parasite star Song Kang-ho and Lee Byung-hun of Squid Game fame in the 2021 film Emergency Declaration.
“I was so adamant in wanting to do K-dramas because that’s where my passion first formed for acting,” Jang told The Hollywood Reporter this month.
She got her big break in Hollywood last year with the series Butterfly alongside Daniel Dae Kim, even though she “never imagined or thought that [she] would be able to work in Hollywood” – a belief she now considers limiting. “Butterfly was definitely a springboard for me,” she mused.
How did she get cast in Beef?

It all started when a clip from the first season of Beef popped up on the British-Korean actress’ Instagram feed. “I remember thinking to myself, ‘This is the kind of role that I want to do,’” the 31-year-old recalled in her THR interview. Soon enough, she was auditioning for Beef season two. “I think I indirectly manifested it,” Jang reflected, adding, “I was so shocked because my manifestations don’t really happen.”
