Guy Ritchie’s Young Sherlock is the hot new thing on TV. The series, inspired by the Young Sherlock Holmes books by Andrew Lane, is currently the No 1 show on Amazon Prime, according to streaming data collection website FlixPatrol. The origin story reimagines Holmes’ (Hero Fiennes Tiffin) relationship with James Moriarty (Dónal Finn), presenting them as friends and partners in crime as they uncover a high-stakes conspiracy involving a Chinese princess, a war weapon and a dark family secret.

“I was always interested in the Moriarty character because he’s a hugely iconic villain,” showrunner Matthew Parkhill told the Los Angeles Times, describing the antagonist and Sherlock as “two sides of the same coin”. It was Tiffin’s “sense of innocence and wonder” that got him the titular role, while Finn’s “magnetism and intensity and charm” screamed Moriarty, Parkhill revealed.

Tiffin famously belongs to the Twisleton-Wykeham-Fiennes family and worked with his uncle, Joseph Fiennes – who plays the Holmes patriarch, Silas – in Young Sherlock.

Dónal Finn hails from Dromina, County Cork, Ireland, where he was born to Dónal Sr and Maureen on August 31, 1995. He grew up on a farm with seven siblings, according to The Irish Times, and went to school in Kanturk. He was raised around music and took up singing himself when he was a boy, he told The Rake magazine.

“For family gatherings, as the night rolls on, people do start to sing. So the notion of singing in front of other people, I always saw as a kid,” the actor explained.
