After winning a bronze medal in the men’s 20km biathlon, Lægreid admitted the transgression on live TV – so who is he?

The 2026 Winter Olympics keep going viral for the wrong reasons. American athletes Breezy Johnson and Alysa Liu, who won gold in women’s downhill and figure skating respectively, broke their medals soon after clinching their big wins. Elsewhere, Czech ice dancers Kateřina Mrázková and Daniel Mrázek have been facing criticism for using an AI-generated track in their Olympic rhythm dance routine, per People magazine. There are also reports of a norovirus outbreak in the Olympic Village, notes CNN. But the latest in this line-up of chaotic stories is a man begging for a second chance.

Norwegian athlete Sturla Holm Lægreid, who won the bronze medal in the men’s 20km biathlon, used his post-win interview to admit on live TV that he had cheated on his girlfriend. Calling her the “love of [his] life”, the 28-year-old revealed that they met six months ago, three months after which he stepped out on her, and only fessed up to it days ago.
