Nicole Richie’s daughter Harlow Madden turned 18 on January 11, and the proud mama took to Instagram to celebrate the milestone with a carousel of Harlow’s childhood photos. “18 years of you @katemaddennn,” she wrote with heart and cake emojis.
Fans were quick to note that Richie’s elder child goes by Kate rather than Harlow. Speaking to People magazine at an event, the media personality clarified that her daughter has gone by her middle name her whole life.

She maintains a low profile
Harlow Winter Kate Madden was born in 2008 to Nicole Richie and her husband, Good Charlotte frontman Joel Madden, who she’s been married to since 2010. The couple also share a son, Sparrow James Midnight Madden, 16.
Despite their high-profile mum – who is the adopted daughter of Lionel Richie and best known for starring in noughties reality TV show The Simple Life alongside socialite Paris Hilton – both Kate and her brother have kept a low profile, rarely making red carpet appearances. According to Richie in an interview with People from nearly a decade ago, Kate was an introverted child and preferred to stay out of the spotlight.
Kate and Sparrow made a rare red carpet appearance in early 2024 when they attended the Los Angeles premiere of their mum’s film, Don’t Tell Mom the Babysitter’s Dead.
