The Iranian-American actress started life as a refugee; she was in The Deuce before joining the Emmy-winning medical drama starring Noah Wyle

As the Emmy-winning American medical drama The Pitt returns for its highly anticipated second season, there is a new addition to the show’s cast: Sepideh Moafi. The Iranian-American actress takes on the role of attending physician Dr Baran Al-Hashimi, who joins the emergency department staff at Pittsburgh Trauma Medical Center.

Moafi had been a fan of the show since its debut a year ago, and told People magazine, “It feels like this Herculean challenge to enter this award-winning show that everybody’s obsessed with.”

Here’s what to know about Sepideh Moafi.

She was born in a refugee camp

Sepideh Moafi was born in September 1985 in a refugee camp in Regensburg, Germany, after her parents fled from Iran following the 1979 Islamic Revolution. Her family had spent two years in Turkey before moving to Germany, and then the US, she told People.

While Moafi has found success in acting, having previously landed roles in TV shows such as The L Word: Generation Q and The Deuce, she also has a background in singing. She began singing at the age of 15 and quickly earned a full scholarship to the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, she told the website StageBuddy. She is a classically trained opera singer, and later shifted into musical theatre and jazz.
