Fans are in shock after watching last week’s episode of Taylor Sheridan’s Landman, which unveiled some unexpected twists.

In the Paramount+ show’s second episode of season two – spoiler alert – Ariana Medina (Paulina Chávez) breaks up with Cooper Norris (Jacob Lofland) after failing to get a hold of him and worrying about his safety after his phone dies at work.

The break-up catalyst may seem trivial to new fans of the show, but those who have followed Ariana’s story through season one can probably understand her anxiety: she lost her former husband to an oil rig explosion in season one.

Chávez, who portrays Ariana on the show, said in an interview with Us Weekly that she empathises with her character’s decision: “She realises what’s at stake [with] her partner working in the oil industry and she doesn’t want history to repeat itself. She’s really navigating whether or not this is what she wants. Is he going to work with her?”

Chávez was born in May 2002 in El Paso, Texas, and is of Mexican-American heritage. She was a student at Sky Harbour Elementary School in Texas, where she picked up her love for theatre and acting at just seven years old, according to the Southwest Independent School District website. After participating in several school productions, she pursued acting as a career after graduating and landed roles in various projects, including a young Kim Kardashian in a 2018 episode of the Scandal Made Me Famous documentary series.

She credits theatre arts director Carl Dickerson for igniting her passion for acting and still keeps in touch with him, even inviting him to the set of one of her shows.
