Ísadóra Bjarkardóttir Barney, aka Doa, the multitalented daughter of iconic Icelandic singer Björk, has just returned to the runway.
The 22-year-old opened the Cecilie Bahnsen 10-year anniversary show at Copenhagen Fashion Week last Friday with a white tulle dress embellished with bows and floral appliqués. She completed the airy look with white knee socks and trainers. Her brunette bob and shimmering silver make-up also accentuated the outfit’s details.

The Danish fashion brand, Cecilie Bahnsen, known for its romantic, sculptural designs, titled its show “Hana-bi” – the Japanese word for fireworks. The show started with white pieces before shifting into silver. Bahnsen explained, “I always start a new collection with white; it feels like a blank canvas.”
Barney made her modelling debut with Miu Miu for its autumn/winter 2022 collection, joining fellow ambassadors Sydney Sweeney, Emily Ratajkowski and Demi Singleton for the campaign. She also walked in Miu Miu’s spring/summer 2023 collection show during Paris Fashion Week in October 2022.

Who is Doa?

Born in London, Doa is the daughter of singer Björk and her second husband, Matthew Barney, an American visual artist. In 2013, the couple split up, and Barney sued for custody of his daughter, saying he was not getting enough time with her. Their separation inspired Björk song “Black Lake” on the album Vulnicura.
Barney studied in Reykjavík, Iceland, and Brooklyn, New York, each autumn and spring semester. After graduating from high school, she enrolled at Pitzer College in Southern California, but it is unclear if she ever graduated.
Her mother is supportive of her acting career

In a 2022 interview with The Face, Doa said she fell in love with acting at a young age, noting that her mother always supported her dream. “Since I was 13 or 14, I knew I wanted to take acting seriously. And she knew that. So she’s been so supportive. It was important to her that she would help me realise this,” Doa said.
Before graduating from high school, Barney starred in the film The Northman with Alexander Skarsgård, Nicole Kidman, and her mother during the pandemic. Around the same time, her mother encouraged her to make a film as a birthday present. As a result, Barney filmed her first nine-minute short, Almanak, and uploaded it to YouTube in November 2020.
She’s also a singer

Barney is not only a model and actress, but also a musician. In January 2023, she released her debut single “bergmál”, as a member of the Reykjavík art collective Post-Dreifing. The song features layered harmonies, handclaps and simple plucked strings, and was collected in Post-Dreifing’s album Drullumall 4.
In 2022, Barney collaborated with her mother on the song “Her Mother’s House” on the album Fossora, which is about the complex emotions of leaving home. She has also been involved in other musical projects, including recording the Joanna Newsom song “’81” to raise funds for Refugees International in 2021.
