The 59-year-old shot to stardom in 1993 with her album Debut and became a style icon with her signature hairdo and swan dress at the Oscars – she also starred in Lars von Trier’s Dancer in the Dark

While many of us experienced anxiety, sadness and loneliness during the pandemic, it would not be an exaggeration to say that Icelandic singer-songwriter and composer Björk thrived. She recorded her 11th album Fossora during “an unexpectedly happy lockdown in Reykjavík”, per The Guardian.

Now, years out of the pandemic, Björk remains based in her native land, having divided her time between there and various parts of the globe over the past four decades – from London and New York to the Spanish region of Andalusia.

The Queen of Experimental Pop shot to fame with her debut studio album aptly titled Debut in 1993, and swept the globe with her alternative indie sound, which had elements of electric pop. She would go on to record a total of 11 studio albums, including her latest Fossora in 2022, featuring hits like “All is Full of Love”, “Hyperballad” and “Human Behaviour”.

Her songs not only became anthems for a whole generation of music lovers, but also influenced a new wave of musicians who were inspired by her transient sound – and the 59-year-old shows no sign of stopping.

So what has she been up to?

Björk’s environmental activism

The avant-garde artist is famous for incorporating environmental themes into her music like her 2011 album Biophilia, which explores the relationship between humans and nature. The Reykjavík native has become particularly passionate about the environmental woes plaguing Iceland in recent years. Just last year, she released the track “Oral” featuring Spanish pop sensation Rosalía to call on fellow citizens to support a ban on open-net ocean pen salmon fishing.
