  • The Umbrella Academy star Elliot Page came out as trans in 2020, and Halsey also quietly changed their pronouns on their socials to ‘she/they’, saying it ‘feels most authentic to me’
  • Sam Smith announced they were using ‘they/them’ pronouns in 2019, and Demi Lovato changed their pronouns to ‘they/them’ in 2021, but later reincorporated ‘she/her’ pronouns because it was ‘exhausting’

In a recent interview with Harper’s Bazaar, actor Emma Corrin got candid about the transphobic backlash they have received ever since they publicly disclosed their gender identity and swapped their pronouns from “she/her” to “they/ them”.

The actor, best known for portraying Princess Diana on season four of Netflix’s The Crown, changed their pronouns on their Instagram bio to “they/them” in 2022. They previously came out as non-binary and queer in 2021, using both “she/her” and “they/them” at that time.

“In my mind, gender just isn’t something that feels fixed and I don’t know if it ever will be; there might always be some fluidity there for me,” Corrin said in a 2022 interview with Vogue.

The 28-year-old has since spoken multiple times about the unexpected litany of homophobia and transphobia they’ve faced since coming out.

“The vitriol is worse than I anticipated. Even though we like to think we’re in a progressive society, a lot of what we’re seeing is increasingly a step back,” they told Harper’s Bazaar.

Pronouns are an integral part of affirming a person’s gender identity, and as of late more celebrities have opened up about their pronouns and gender fluidity despite the potential public backlash.
