Renowned Chinese director Zhang Yimou will be presented with the 2018 Jaeger-LeCoultre Glory to the Filmmaker award at the 75th Venice International Film Festival for his significant contribution to the modern film industry. The award will be given to Zhang in the Sala Grande (Palazzo del Cinema) on September 6 before the world premiere of his latest movie, Ying (“Shadow”), a martial arts movie set in ancient China.
Zhang has competed at the Venice Film Festival four times. He is the only director to have won all the most important prizes in less than 10 years. He won two Golden Lions for The Story of Qiu Ju in 1992 and Not One Less in 1999, and a Silver Lion for his 1991 movie, Raise the Red Lantern.
