According to Vogue Australia, royals are required to have sleek and neat hairstyles at all times, in public of course. The queen styles her hair with a hat, as per royal tradition, while Kate Middleton opts for a sleek blowout, or keeps her hair in a hairnet. Meghan Markle, however, would sometimes opt for her signature messy bun during public appearances.

Royal women are required to wear tights underneath their dress. Insider reports nude tights are one of the hard and fast rules, as required by the queen herself. Markle isn’t a fan of nude hosiery, though, and who can blame her?

Her final royal engagement seemed like the subtlest way for Markle to break this royal tradition; the Daily Express reported that royal women are not allowed to wear bold make-up in public and Markle’s navy blue eyeshadow, done by her personal make-up artist Daniel Martin, certainly made a statement every time she lowered her eyelids.

Although Markle’s dress at her son’s christening did not deviate from royal colours and style, it was the designer she chose that shook things up in Buckingham Palace. When it comes to royal events of great significance, the family usually sticks to British designers. Middleton chose Alexander McQueen for all her children’s baptisms – Markle opted for Dior, a French designer, instead.

According to CNBC, bold, glittery and dark manicures are not favourable among royal women. The queen’s personal favourite is a natural-looking shade created by the nail varnish company Essie called “Ballet Slippers”. Markle’s dark manicure at the British Fashion Awards 2018 may have broken more than just one rule. There’s a reason royals don’t don dark colours in public, especially if it’s closer to shades of black – those dark colours are reserved for times of mourning within the royal family.

Markle has been seen carrying handbags and crossbody bags more often than the other royal ladies at engagements. Even though it’s not a strict requirement, clutches do serve their purpose, even if it’s not what you think. Reader’s Digest reports royal women tend to carry clutches to avoid shaking hands with everyone they meet, and Lady Diana opted for clutches so she could use them to cover her cleavage when getting out of the car.
