Mukesh Ambani, one of the richest men in Asia, has been in the news a lot as Covid-19 cases in the region and his own home country continue to grow. While some have criticised what he and his family have and haven’t done in the wake of the global pandemic, there are also reasons to praise his actions and the potential they have to save lives.

The Ambani tradition of helping

Ambani’s firm, Reliance Industries, is the largest firm in South Asian, employing about half a million people not only in India but also in the Middle East and Europe. Ambani is working hard to prevent his employees catching Covid-19, as is clear from his recent directives to local and international offices.

He is making it easy for his employees to work from home to protect themselves, their children and family members from contracting the potentially deadly disease. He has set up a medical helpline for employees and their families, established medical teams at all his campuses and laid out social distancing and hygiene guidelines to protect staff members and customers alike from infection.

Additionally, Ambani took part in India’s recent “Janta Curfew”, a voluntary measure put forth by Prime Minister Narendra Modi to encourage people to stay home as much as possible, while taking time to appreciate health care workers and first responders by ringing bells in their honour at a set time.

At the same time, Ambani has faced criticism for failing to follow in the footsteps of other billionaires and donate large sums of money to the fight against the coronavirus. A mocking viral social media post points out that while Bill Gates, Jack Ma and Ken Griffin have donated millions of dollars to the fight against Covid-19, Ambani did little more than ring a bell for a few minutes.

To make matters worse, Ambani’s adult daughter Isha has faced national scorn for holding a crowded Holi party in early March. Scores of Indian celebrities attended the event at her Worli bungalow with little to no regard for the social distancing measures recommended by the World Health Organisation and international medical experts.

Throughout this time, Ambani has also faced numerous challenges running his business. The 62-year-old had his hands full buying additional Reliance Industries shares to raise the company’s value – reeling from a loss of close to 30 per in its stock market value thanks to the recent crash in oil prices.
Which celebrities have tested positive for Covid-19?
It’s worth remembering that Ambani does have a clear altruistic track record, and even ranked as the greatest giver on the Hurun India Philanthropy List 2018 – so it’s not unlikely that we he will at some point donate money to the fight against the novel coronavirus. However, as of now, the richest man in India is clearly focusing his time and energy on keeping his company afloat and providing his staff members with the best possible care and protection from the coronavirus.
