The US President Donald Trump escaped his impeachment trial, and flew to the Swiss Alps for the economic conferences.

Tomorrow marks the start of the World Economic Forum's Annual Meeting in Davos, Switzerland. Every year the picturesque town welcomes thousands of people - from government leaders to industry innovators, there's a wealth of diverse nationalities. The first-ever Annual Meeting was held in 1971 to discuss management practices in European business. Besides Trump, other world influencers including German chancellor Angela Merkel and activist Greta Thunberg will be joined by nearly 3,000 participants from over 130 countries.

So, what really happens in Davos: where the representatives of governments, financiers and investors stay, where they eat and how they spend their time next to the main event? Here, we offer an insider’s guide.
Where do presidents, CEO’s and ambassadors stay?

More than 100 billionaires are expected to be present during the next few days, and all hotels in and around Davos have been booked out for months. So where do the rich and famous stay? The US president has his own luxurious floor at the InterContinental which has been built for this event. Locals have dubbed the hotel “the golden egg”.

Other properties are also occupied by industry movers and shakers, such as the Steigenberger Grandhotel and the Seehof Hotel, both of which combine traditional Swiss charm of a grand hotel with the comfort of a modern building. And the Grischa Hotel which offers personified service, contemporary hotel rooms, a traditional and avant-garde inspired restaurant paired with a comfortable bar next to a rustic fireplace decorated with the antlers of a stag.
What high society events does Davos offer?

Every year, the owners of the shops along the main road rent their stores to large multinationals that use the space to organise pavilion events so that important clients can meet senior government officials and financiers while they drink champagne and eat caviar.

Next to the official WEF conference, there are many parties where “non badge” holders can mingle and get a glimpse of the celebrity lifestyle. Then there are the evening drinks parties, known in Davos-speak as “nightcaps” where high-net-worth individuals consume rare spirits.
Where do the celebrities spend their time away from the conference?

Visitors are able to explore the slopes in three ski areas: Pischa, Jakobshorn and Rinerhorn. Cross-country skiing attracts young and old alike. The local ice hockey club HC Davos will be playing in the Valiant Arena, where the atmosphere in the VIP lounges is bound to be lively. Most Grand Hotels offer their guests private spa services that allow world leaders to clear their heads after a long day at the conference. There is nothing more relaxing than sitting in a hot tub overlooking the snow-capped Swiss mountains.

What do they eat in Davos?
The occasion gives corporate and government representatives an opportunity to mingle. The creme de la creme dine in remote chalets spread around Davos. Big corporations usually invite clients to dinner and introduce them to influential figures, like Indian film star and producer Deepika Padukone who will receive an award this year for her contribution to mental health.


Lunch for participants at the conference is generally held in the conference area. The menu this year will be pumpkin soup, broccoli mousse with nuts, smoked halloumi and chocolate cake, but most executives can be seen eating a sandwich between meetings.
The WEF Committee states that the food served is produced by Swiss farmers, and restaurant chefs are using artificial intelligence to reduce food waste. The institution provides a report on the type, weight, cost and source of the food that has been binned, and the information is used to arrange future food orders.
For those who want to surprise acquaintances, book a fondue evening on the Schatzalp. There is nothing better than eating hot cheese accompanied by red wine from the region; and then use the sledge to find your way back through the forest on snow-covered slopes to Davos.
