With less than six weeks until Christmas and the new year, and probably less than three weeks until holiday parties begin, now is the time to take a good look in the mirror and start thinking of ways to make a positive impact at that office Christmas party – and not in a bad, Bridget Jones kind of way.


Sioban Guilfoyle, director of Glow Spa in Central, has a few tips to share – and we are definitely listening. Her spa and salon space spans 4,400 sq ft and offers total pampering, from head to toe – literally. Oh, and your tummy will be well taken care of, too.
How do celebrities Kate Moss and Sienna Miller get their red-carpet glow?

“[At the bar], we make sure our clients are well cared for. We’ve been offering home-made biscuits and banana cake for almost as long as we’ve been in operation. We’re probably as well known for our sweets as our services!”

But I digress – this story is about looking great, not great food.
There are few things worse than turning up at the party in an old, tattered gown, but two really awful mistakes are having eyebrows that are not on fleek and hair that is just crying out for a good wash and colour (the latter is an absolute disaster).


Hair and brows


“Power brows are probably on the way out as we head into 2020,” Guilfoyle says. “More natural-looking brows and brow shapes are likely the next look as this aligns well with a less-is-more trend that’s still gathering steam. Following from the trajectory of brows, lashes are likely to be softer and less overly dramatic. Lash lifting coupled with keratin treatments are the new big thing for lashes.”
Her salon hosts one of Hong Kong’s most sought-after microblading specialists, Elizabeth Loennborn (she cut her teeth at Laura Mercier and was a national artist and trainer for the company). Loennborn is certified by Microblading LA and was taught by Lindsey Ta, world-champion microblading artist and pioneer of the 3D brow.
When it comes to hair, she has a team of stylists who bring different levels of expertise to the salon, including Afro-hair styling.
Glow Spa has also most recently become Hong Kong’s first accredited Gold Fever hair extension salon. (In case you’re wondering, Gold Fever hair extensions are 100 per cent ethically-sourced Indian hair).
As a vegan, I was also really happy to see brands such as Aromatherapy Associates in the spa and Davines stocked in the salon.

Senior stylist Danielle Weldon, whilst giving my hair a whip and a snip, also chimes in about how keeping hair looking nice in Hong Kong is all about the city. “Hong Kong – the humidity! – dictates what you can do with your hair,” she says. “Therefore, collarbone length ’dos are easy to maintain. I find a lot of my customers are [cutting their hair that length]. It is a soft kind of bob and you can add layers in, or a fringe, and you style it in many different ways. It’s easy but very striking.”

Guilfoyle says, “[The trend is] moving away from the sleek bob and embracing the raggy-edge bob. Softer balayage and a move to warmer colours for brunette [is now popular, too].”
Throwback styles, such as the 70s and 80s shags, are still going strong, with “curly heads embracing their curls by adding highlights for depth and texture”.


“Couple the bob with a balayage,” Weldon recommends. “Balayage is still trending strong and it gives your hair a sun-kissed look.”

If you’re looking to go crazy with your hair colour though, Guilfoyle suggests staying away from bright colours. “The more popular colour is now pastel rather than primary, and only as a splash rather than a full head.”


Body and nails
While we can rejoice about the growing attitude toward self-acceptance and unconditional love for all body types, it goes without saying I would highly suggest making body therapies and pampering massages a weekly ritual.
And whatever you do, don’t forget your nails.
To save us from mulling over the various colours on the colour wheel, Guilfoyle suggests: “Understated colours will be the primary trend, with more peachy colours on popular demand and pastels likely replacing reds as the dominant palette. For Hong Kong in particular, we’re expecting an uptick in interest for alternatives to soft gels. Powder-dipped nails are potentially going mainstream in Hong Kong in 2020.”
Why K-beauty salons are catering to the youth market
Carrying on
Despite the ongoing protests in Hong Kong, Guilfoyle maintains the business is expanding. However, she says, it will take more than just hard work, a new location and new look to make it work at this difficult time.
“We’re definitely not immune to the impact of the protests. It’s affected us as it has everyone else in Hong Kong. Once you’re at Glow, we’re sensitive to what our clients are looking for. Some want an hour or two away from what’s happening on the street, others want to talk to us about what they’re seeing on the street and in the news. We’re working hard on being here for our clients. Our team [is] doing all they can to be here despite the transport disruptions, and we’re doing our utmost to ensure our clients continue to receive a Glow level of care.”
Protests aside, nothing is going to put a damper on their Christmas spirit. “We’re gearing up for the Christmas and new year’s rush as this is a very busy time of year. We’re also assembling some goodies that’ll make really well-priced Christmas gifts, and we’re finalising our Christmas cake recipe” (most important!). Let’s just hope there will be a vegan version!
