It matters little whether you are plumbing the depths of information website Pinterest or flipping through glossy travel magazines for inspiration, planning a honeymoon can be just as stressful – sometimes even more so – than the wedding itself.
According to Pinterest’s trend report on honeymoons and holidays, and Protravel International’s report on travel trends, creative millennial honeymooners are seeking many exclusive experiences to spend their special days.

From wild romance to Alpine adventures, from digital detoxing to a “multi-moon”, their choices reveal new travel trends catching on in the honeymoon segment.

However, one thing is common. That elusive location an average honeymooner is seeking should be exceptionally Instagrammable.
All this is presuming you don’t want a “solo-moon” – a bizarre trend that peaked last year where couples take separate holidays after their wedding – which, if you do, is not a sign of a bad romance, of course, only perhaps, a millennial one.

Millennials are aware that it’s not enough that you eat organic avocado toast for breakfast and then call it a day to be environmentally sustainable.
Eco-friendly holidays have been topping the hottest travel trends lists for years now and this year it has predictably reached the shores of honeymooners as well.
One hopes this trend becomes a standard fixture in all travel lists for, Lord knows, the world needs more environmentally conscious travellers.
What does it entail when you become an eco-friendly honeymooner?
Ranging from going completely plastic-free on your honeymoon (and avoid using things such as single-use plastic straws, disposable coffee cups and plastic carrier bags) to choosing to be part of a beach clean-up in the preferred location, there are many available choices.

Multi-moon
One can’t blame anyone for wishing their wedding to be a prolonged honeymoon.
Multi-mooning (not a thing yet, though now it will be) is a trend for couples with deep pockets to splurge on, nothing short of an indulgent honeymoon. Increasingly, there’s a trend of newlyweds using their honeymoon as an opportunity to plan a multi-destination, “bucket-list” trip.

Africa seems to be a particularly popular choice for its diversity and adventure, and properties such as Mahali Mzuri in Kenya are gearing up to meet this demand by adding things such as “Winelands and Wildlife” packages, allowing couples to combine a safari with a stay at Mont Rochelle hotel and vineyard in South Africa – a perfect gateway to begin experiencing all that Africa has to offer.

Digital detox-moon
Perhaps to prepare for the incessant chatter that is bound to dominate the rest of their married lives, some honeymooners seem to want to start the precious beginning of their time together in, erm, silence.
Protravel International recently listed “disconnecting” as its top trend in luxury travel and there has been a steady increase in honeymooners tapping into this hot new trend. To this effect, honeymooners seem to look far and wide to plan their special trip.

Virgin Limited Edition recently revealed in its newsletter that many guests choose its luxury property Kasbah Tamadot in Morocco’s Atlas Mountains, not only for its tranquil setting, but also because it allows them to “unplug” from the digital clamour that punctuates their daily existence.

Those choices are plentiful, though. Much like Kasbah, numerous properties around the world encourage guests to switch off their mobile phones in communal areas while keeping all bedrooms free from distractions, such as televisions or other forms of electronic connectivity.

There are tad too many abandoned castles in eastern Europe – Belarus’ fortresses, Romania’s Transylvanian castles and Georgia’s monasteries – waiting to trend on Instagram.
Naturally, this trend seems to be directed to achieve peak Instagram brownie points. There is nothing creepy to want to go to a quiet/isolated destination for it’s only natural that honeymooners want some peace and quiet.
It is perhaps why this honeymoon trend is peaking in 2019.

With picture-perfect views and charming villages to explore, it’s no surprise that Pinterest reported an 856 per cent rise in Switzerland being “pinned” as a honeymoon destination.
