The world’s largest exhibition for the mobile phone industry, The Mobile World Congress (MWC) Barcelona, in Spain has often been the launch pad for the latest smartphone innovations.
The roll-out of fifth-generation (5G) mobile services in the United States and South Korea is expected in the second half of this year.
That means the focus of this year’s show, at the Fira de Barcelona convention centre, from February 25 to 28, will be on the arrival of the industry’s first 5G smartphones.

Huawei has said that it will “bring the world’s first 5G smartphones with [a] foldable screen” to MWC. It is likely to be unveiled at a press conference on February 24, the day before the show’s opening.

The phone is expected to use the Chinese company’s own Kirin 980 processor and the Balong 5000 multimode 5G modem, which can achieve download speeds of up to 4.6Gbps over a sub-6GHz network, and up to 6.5Gbps over mmWave spectrum.
It should have a folded screen measuring 5 inches (12.7 centimetres) and an open screen size of 8 inches.

Besides 5G phones, Huawei may also unveil its flagship P30 smartphone at MWC, although reports in past few days suggest that the Chinese manufacturer might skip the event and opt for an announcement in late March in Paris.
The P30 features an enhanced organic light-emitting diode (OLED) display with a 6-inch screen size and resolution of 1080 x 2340 pixels.

It is equipped with an in-display fingerprint sensor and triple cameras on the back. There is also a high-end variant called P30 Pro, which has four rear cameras and may also support 5G.

LG is expected to announce its first 5G smartphone jointly with its telecom partner, Sprint, of the US at a press conference on February 24.
Called V50 ThinQ, the phone will use Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 855 chip set and has a new vapour cooling chamber to dissipate heat. It will come with a 4,000mAh battery to extend battery life for 5G use. Other features include dual front-facing cameras, triple rear cameras and a fingerprint sensor on the back.

The South Korean company should also launch its flagship LG G8, which will use the display as a speaker for the first time.
This new technology turns the entire OLED panel into an audio amplifier, working together with its traditional speaker on the bottom or separately.
Also powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 855 chip set, the phone features a 6.1-inch OLED display, a USB-C port, and a 3.5mm (0.13-inch) headphone jack.
Three rear cameras, an LED flash and a fingerprint sensor are located on its glass back.

It seems unlikely that Sony will unveil its 5G smartphone, the Xperia 5G, at MWC as the phone is reportedly still under development.
However, there is a good chance that the Japanese company will announce its flagship Xperia XZ4 smartphone at its press conference on February 25.
The phone will feature a 52MP main camera, which will be the highest-resolution of any of the world’s current smartphones.
Unlike the curved display of its predecessor, the XZ3, it will have a 6.5-inch OLED QHD+ (3360 x 1440 pixels) flat-panel display with 21:9 aspect ratio.
The handset also features a front-facing camera, three rear cameras (16MP, 52MP and 0.3MP), and a side-mounted fingerprint sensor under the power button.
Also powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 855 chip set, the phone will come with 6GB RAM and 128GB onboard storage, a microSD slot, and a large 4400mAh battery.
Colour options will include black, silver, blue and deep purple. An Xperia XZ4 Compact version with a 5-inch screen should be available later.

Samsung, which is expected to announce its new Galaxy S10 series – and perhaps also a foldable phone Galaxy F/X on February 20 – should showcase the new models at MWC – very likely alongside its S10 5G variant and its new Galaxy Watch Active smartwatch.

Among other smartphone makers, Xiaomi may introduce its 6.4-inch Mi Mix 3, announced last month in Europe, although its 5G variant is unlikely to be available until later this year.
It may even unveil its first foldable phone.
There will also be new phones from other Chinese phone makers such as ZTE, OnePlus and Oppo. Other new models to watch out at the show will include a foldable version of Razr V4 by Motorola, Nokia 9 Pureview by Nokia and V15 Pro by Vivo.
