Today marks the 25th birthday of South Korean K-pop star J-Hope, one of the seven members of the world-conquering boy band BTS.

The group, formed by Big Hit Entertainment in 2013, has enjoyed a hugely successful past 12 months – twice topping the American Billboard album chart – and playing to sold-out concerts during the North American part of its world tour.


Last month the group released its second film offering, Love Yourself in Seoul, at cinemas in the South Korea capital, Seoul, which shows footage of the boy band from one of its “World Tour: Love Yourself” concerts.
The film, which attracted the country’s second-biggest ever film opening weekend, followed the November worldwide release of another film, showing behind-the-scenes footage of the band and also scenes of the group in concert, Burn the Stage: The Movie.

This film has been seen by more than 2 million people.
In honour of the birthday boy J-Hope, who was born Jung Ho-seok in the South Korean city of Gwangju, on February 18, 1994, let’s check out some of the highlights from his life.

The rapper, dancer and songwriter showed his talent as a dancer long before joining BTS.
He was a member of the underground dance group, Neuron, and also took regular dance classes at the the Gwangju Music Academy.

J-Hope is often referred to as “Hobi” by his fans.
He revealed the meaning of his stage name in 2013.
“My name has the deepest meaning out of all the others in this group,” he said with a laugh.

J-Hope said he was inspired by the story from Greek mythology of Pandora’s Box, where hope was all that remained after the box was opened, releasing many different evil things into the world.
He used the word “hope” in his stage name because he wanted to be a hopeful presence for both the group and its fans, and also added the “J” as it is the first letter of his real name, he said.
Going ‘solo’


J-Hope was the third member of BTS to join the group.
He made his debut with the band on the South Korean television series, M Countdown. 
The K-pop star is also the third member of the team to put out an independent mixtape.
His prominent role in the co-writing and production process of the group’s albums and side-productions has not stopped him from working on his independent project.

Last March he released his first solo mixtape, Hope World, which gave his global fans a taste of his own brand of music.
The offering, which included three singles, entered Billboard’s Top 100 World Album Chart.
J-Hope posted a clip of him preparing for the release on Twitter, which was viewed more than 2.6 million times within 16 hours of it being shared.
